2d10 instead of d20

Has anyone else tried to re-create the CT feel by using 2d10 instead of 1d20 for rolls?

You could even adapt the task system to DC (and replace criticals with the need to roll 10 greater than the DC).

I'm thinking about trying it, has anyone got any pointers?

WotC's recent Unearthed Arcana has a replacement 3d6 for d20 including what else to change and why. I think that covers a change in criticals. You likely could change that to 2d10 with little modification (not sure on the math at the exact moment though). The book's full of other mods to d20.

As for other pointers, there's a thread on CotI about possible ways to add T20 DCs (or a modified form of) to the BITS Task system.

HTH,

I'm not sure if you'd "recreate a CT feel" using 2d10 rather than 1d20. What it does do is give you a proper "average roll" where 11 is the most likely result (10% likely) instead of an equal 5% probability of getting anything from 1 to 20.

As far as I can figure out, the probabilities are as follows:

code:

2d10 # of combos fraction percent cumulative
2 1 0.01 1 1
3 2 0.02 2 3
4 3 0.03 3 6
5 4 0.04 4 10
6 5 0.05 5 15
7 6 0.06 6 21
8 7 0.07 7 28
9 8 0.08 8 36
10 9 0.09 9 45
11 10 0.1 10 55
12 9 0.09 9 64
13 8 0.08 8 72
14 7 0.07 7 79
15 6 0.06 6 85
16 5 0.05 5 90
17 4 0.04 4 94
18 3 0.03 3 97
19 2 0.02 2 99
20 1 0.01 1 100
[/QUOTE]It's not very bell-shaped though - in fact the distribution is triangular - so while it's better than a flat 5% for everything, it's not much better than 1d20. I think 3d6 would be better if you want an engine that makes it a lot more likely for results to be average than to be extreme.

Malenfant, the 2d6 CT system is also a triangular distribution
.

Casey, for some reason my players hate d6 mechanics, so 3d6 is out. "Roll two dice" just sounds right for Traveller.

Heh. I usually hear CT/MT folk say d6s just sound right or 2d6 just sounds right. But I'm a BRP fan so 2d10 / 1d100 sounds fine to me. ^_^

Well like I suggested you should still take a look at the 3d6 mod in Unearthed Arcana and change it to a 2d10 mod.

So it is. In that case, 2d10 should be fine :D

Has anyone actually used the 2D10 or 3D6 instead of a D20 idea in a real play session yet? I was wondering how it went, whether the feel was what you were looking for or not, etc.

Confession time - I'm going to use it (2d10 instead of 1d20) to run a game of d20Modern/Call of Cthulhu initially (with the T20 armour and damage rules).
That will end with the PCs in a Sci-Fi setting. At which point, out come the Traveller rules ;)

First session is still a couple of weeks away though.

The d20 roll is a straight random roll. If you add an extra die, then it becomes a probablity roll. I think I'd rather keep it more random.
