Absolutely dead or just mostly dead?

I don't think you're disagreeing with me - what I'm saying is that anything used on the frontier will have to be maintainable on the frontier, including electronic devices, software and infrastructure. This means that sealed black box units will be less attractive than simpler, open devices that can be repaired and modified with local resources.

Do you mean you work with open-source IOT software or O/S platforms and hypervisors? :)

I think I need more coffee...it's been a fun but rough week or so. If you consider RHCE stuff Open Source still, yeah. :)

I've looked at the IoT and it scares the snot out of me. Given the lack of security skills most programmers have, as evidenced by the numerous and frequent system cracks, putting more vulnerable software out there is a bad idea.

What's this RHCE you speak of - is it something like CentOS? ;)

Yes, q.v. the car that somebody hacked remotely the other day or the smart fridge that's leaking people's gmail account details. Really, I think having my gadgets not connected is getting to be something of a feature these days.
