Air Raft

Where's the furry dice hanging from the rearview mirror??? And the luminous blue fur steering wheel cover???

only thing I can't figure is the little dingus in the middle of the dashboard, on the top of the dashboard...is it a vidscreen/control panel or a big honking rearview, cuz I swaer I think I see a rearview mirror too...

????

topnotch work, BTW...I take it the textures will render it in color?

With regards to which side the steering yolk "should" be on in the Air/Raft- a few years ago in the UK there used to be a TV science programme called "Tomorrow's World". I remember seeing a red sports car the Russians had built, with one of them thar new-fangled computer thangs in it (this was in the 80s).

Raymond Baxter (the presenter) pressed a button on the central column (between the two front seats) and - hey presto! -the steering system arced up and over behind the windscreen/shield from the right side to the left. Gears/clutch/brakes were on a control column behind the wheel (like F1 racing cars today, in fact........)

Don' see no reason why this here Air/Raft contraption couldn't do the same...

Gee, if only there was a publisher that produced Traveller material that wanted some really awesome 3D artwork for their products... ;)

Drooooll...

Aw, damn, I need a napkin.

The lights are slightly odd. I figure it's my instincts insisting on orange/red rear lights. Though, green/red (or whatever the Imperium uses) navigation lights might not be a bad idea.

I'm having a slight problem with the seats, they don't quite look convincing. The design is nice enough, they just look like they're a model and not the real thing. Not sure why though.

You must not be familiar with GURPS Traveller then!

Hunter

Fantastic! (as usual from the 'Crow)

Two suggestions:

1. The front seats seem to have more room around them than a standard car has nowadays - is there something that can/should take up that room? (perhaps thicker side columns next to the doors?)

2. The front and rear lights would be hard to see from below, as this is a grav vehicle I'd think you'd want as much visisbility on those features as possible.

Lastly, if this is a scout air-raft then it needs more 'bits' hanging off it. Perhaps a lashed on extra aerial, or bull horns on the front, or a flag, or at least a dozen stickers from different worlds ...

Scarecrow, I had a look at your starships. Magnificent! The Wedgie is particularly cool. Those renders make me want to jump back into a Traveller campaign with a Scout/Courier at the top of my shopping list.

Well done!

Great suggestions - particularly about the lights.

Gruffty - I was actually planning on hanging some furry dice from the rear-view =) I may well do for some renders.
With regards to the Steering column - I saw that episode!! Well, the Dashboard is definately designed in a fixed position but it's a cool idea =)

Bryan - That's a kind of nailed on sat-nav monitor. It'll have a pic of an OS map textured on to it eventually.

Rindis - Yeah, the lights will be coloured eventually - as will the whole craft. It's only in grey/black/white at the moment for modelling purposes. I tend to work like that. It's a bit like sculpting with 'green stuff' and then painting afterwards.
Also - I know what you mean about the seats. They actually look more convincing with some textures on but they are a little formless and lumpy and it's really bugging me. I've got to sort that out I think.

Falkayn - Yeah, it's wider than your average car. The front seats are further apart than my Astra (from which I've taken the measurements) and have more space either side of them too. It doesn't make much sense froma design point of view but it doesn't spoil the model really so I'll probably leave it.
Good point on the lights. I think they need totally rethinking. I'm not entirely happy with the modelling anyway.
As for add-ons. Well, definately. This is just the showroom model at present

Thanks again all. I'll update the pics when I have something substantial to show. Who knows - this could turn into an Air-Raft design focus group :D

Crow

Looks great. What app are you using to do the modelling. I am lacking a good program right now to model with. I would like to get a OBJ file and texture it. Great Work I like a lot of what I saw on your page awsome. With stuff like that Traveller would be a best seller.

It's a 3D rendering, not a physical model that you can build.

Which just goes to show how darn good 'Crow is at doing 3D stuff, if people can't tell his image from a real thing
.

Confusingly perhaps, constructing objects in 3D-rendering programs is referred to as "modelling" and the objects themselves are sometimes referred to as "models". You construct the object in the program, and then basically take a picture of it (or make an animation of it moving), and that part is "rendering". But despite the terminology these aren't "models" in the sense of real, physical objects that you can make out of plastic kits. ;)

Yeah, but they use Jesse DeGraff's stuff more than 'Crow's (though he did do the very fine cover art for the Sword worlds book, which is also completely 3D rendered). Frankly, I think the quality of 'Crow's work is vastly superior to Jesse's. 'crow did, after all, work as a CG artist/designer for a computer game publisher.

I'd love to see some of Scarecrow's work in some QLI products though. But I guess that would depend on a lot of things. ;)
