Annic Nova Questions

Jeffr0

SOC-14 1K
What happened to the people on the Annic Nova? (Yeah... I know they're dead... but where'd they pick up the disease?)

Why were they jumping around and avoiding contact so...?

Where'd they get that cargo? How did they find the ship?

Who made the ship?

Does anyone know of anyone that figured out the numbering system during play (including the double zero!)

Seems that they have a bit of unique Jump Drive technology. A jump Drive that operates without jump fuel, just collected stellar energy.

For the ref it was.... But the players would just pick it up from clues such as the elevator's markings.

I saw no clues that would give away the double zero, though.... and I think you only get the bonus to understand the ship if you understand the double zero!

So, how about the ANNIC NOVA's serial number? What if it were some kind of Vilani USP?

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;"> A N N I C N O V A
4 00 00 1 9 00 0 2 4</pre>[/QUOTE]7 digits, then 5 digits. The Anglic serial number is:

4000019 - 00024

Those numbers are tantalizing. Even more tantalizing are the "empty slots", implying that this ship is just a taste of the kinds of models that may have been produced.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to give meaning to the serial number. Values to consider include (but are not limited to or required):

</font>
  • "Size" digit (a la the UWP?)</font>
  • Drive capabilities</font>
  • Model number ("The A2s were always a bit twitchy.")</font>
  • Number in series (i.e. 3rd of 5)</font>
Things to think about as you're completing the exercise:

</font>
  • It's like a yacht built for long cruises through the Wilds.</font>
  • Built for human(oid)s.</font>
  • Assuming it had a third boat for normal maneuver ability, what might be the displacement and performance of such a boat?</font>
  • Why does the ANNIC NOVA require solar collectors, when the pinnaces produce hugely gargantuan amounts of power in short order? What are those "solar" collectors really collecting? My take is that this bizarre jump capacitor system requires a trickle charge over a long period of time. Faster rates would burn it out. (waves hands madly)</font>

To kick things off, here's some ideas I've been considering.

</font>
  • "4" might mean 4 x 150 tons = 600 tons</font>
  • "00" might be a reserved military code</font>
  • "00" might be an unknown code, not used here</font>
  • "19" might mean "Jump Configuration 19":
    </font>
    • </font>
    • divide by 6 to get the jump number</font>
    • remainder is the number of backup drives (at J-1)</font>
  • "00" is another unknown code, not used here</font>
  • "024" might mean "unit 24"; i.e. the 24th ship of its kind produced.</font>
<font size="2" face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica"><font size="2" face="Verdana,Arial,Helvetica">

I could assume the solar charger is "assumed", and a tugboat-based maneuver system is "assumed".

Example 1

So if I "built" a civilian 300 ton, J2 ship (without backup drive) from the same shipyards, and it was the 200th of its kind, its serial number would be

2 (V): i.e. 200 x 1.5 = 300 tons
00 (N): non-military
00 (N): unknown code
12 (IV): Jump-2, no backup
00 (N): unknown code
200 (VN): 200th unit

or VNNIV NVN

Example 2
Or a 450-ton military pursuit vessel with Jump-4 and three backups, the 42nd of its kind:

3 (7) 3 x 150 = 450 tons
14 (IA) some military classification
00 (N) unknown code
27 (VL) jump frame 27 = J4 + 3 backups
00 (N) unknown code
42 (AV) 42nd of its kind

7IANVL NAV

Example 3

Let's do this backwards. Arrange the serial number to make some nonsense and see what the ship is.

00: non-military
67: unknown code with a value in it!
32: jump frame 32 = Jump-5, 2 backups @ J4
56: unknown code with a value in it?
714: the 714th of its kind. Very popular model.

I'm now thinking that the military code could be an armoring value, and the unknown code after it could be some kind of "equipment loadout" number, where "00" means the default minimum. So it gets the clunky minimum possible computer and a minimal defense package, for example.

As a more general question what would the AN's using solar collectors rather than conventional fusion power plants do to its sensor signature?

It always struck me as a near perfect spy ship - plenty of room for the crew, workshop for Q-type gadgets, doesn't have to refuel at any kind of planet, multiple fast small craft to run errands.

Yeah, can that radiation collector be detected?

If yes, then it sticks out like a sore thumb.
If no, then it's ideally sneaky.

I'll add that the "radiation-absorbent film" canopy may actually protect crew from certain radiation hazards, much in the same way a black globe can protect crew from energy beams.

This could also yet another sign that the ANNIC NOVA is not low-tech.

I also noticed that Bill Keith's 1980 drawing of the xboat tender has two inscriptions on it. Though predating the Vilani alphabet by years, the forms look Vilani-like. I wonder what they say.

Actually, they look a lot like the Vilani numeric system. I suppose, then, that the inscriptions are serial numbers.

H'm, I suppose they're most likely influenced by ANNIC NOVA. In that case, the inscriptions appear to be:

(dot) 3 (dot) 6 1 (or 7)
and
3 8 9 (dot) 3 8 (dot)
