Another Task System Idea

Yeah. If I were to use this system, I'd have the players roll 4D at once making sure that 2D were distinguishable from the other 2D.

(Just like I roll all a character's attack rolls & damage for a round at the same time when playing D&D.)

I'm not a huge fan of the time roll.

To be honest, the time roll is not tereribly important most of the time. (Inttentional punning.) Having the time roll be an available mechanic, however, allows several other kinds of suspense, that neither a time-ignored policy nor a fixed time rate, nor even a quantized half/whole/double model lacks.

If it's not important, I often shortcut it. But I love having it available.

FWIW when I played in a MT tournament refereed by Joe Fugate at GenCon in 1990, he didn't use the time roll for any of the tasks in the game. The rules themselves (in the "handling tasks" advice section in the Referee Manual) recommend ignoring the time roll unless it's particularly important to the situation. I like having the duration rules for when they're needed, but about 90% of the time I just ignore them.

And, oh yeah, the idea of rolling 5D all at once -- 3 of one color/size, 2 of another -- is very clever; I'd never thought of that (oddly, since in our RQ games we used to do it this way -- roll to hit (d%), location (d20), and damage (various) all at once).
