asteroid "cabin"

using CT HG rules;

50 ton asteroid hull TL-9
m-drive 1
p-plant 1
4 tons fuel (8 months duration)
small craft bridge
computer mod.1
4 staterooms
3 tons hydroponics bay/lounge, 6 person capacity (no rules for this - I used GT modular cutter as basis)
4 tons cargo bay

9.795 mc (1.959 mc down / 40,813 cr / month mortgage / 9795 cr annual maint)

The first use that came to mind when looking at this design was its potential use as a retreat for families of hermits. By hermits I'm thinking {non-traveller phrases} religious groups, hippies, criminals lying low, monks seeking enlightenment, artists, writers.

Just thinking aloud along this track, but perhaps variants might exist that are;

  • large enough to carry two or three families and perhaps longer duration.
  • jerry built variants using mining lasers and equipped with cannibalized drives, staterooms, etc. Perhaps ill-gotten from pirating activities and then "rented out" to hermits along with "protection" services.
  • communities of these ships in the asteroid belts. Each family creating home-made goods and trading amongst each other. Perhaps groups meeting at key times in the calender to socialise, trade and marry off children. Pirates, smugglers, miners and traders working with the main planet may provide raw materials. And perhaps trading high quality art and trinkets to art galleries and gift shops.
Random thoughts...

Contemplating and designing long-duration cruises and vessels from time to time myself, I have always felt that GURPS was a little generous with this number, so I have a couple of notes.

1. This here above is only for hydroponics, which means a dedicated greenhouse for growing plant-based foodstuffs and maybe recycling some carbon dioxide. It does not seem to include things like carbon-nitrogen-phosphates-etc and water recovery from sewage processing, nor does it provide a mechanism to regulate how much atmosphere is processed. Borrowing from GURPS: Space, mid-high-tech Full Life Support would take 2dt per person and require annual replenishment and servicing. Total Life Support as a high-tech, sealed, maintenance-free system would take 4dt per person (this effectively means going to 8dt single-occupancy staterooms). This level of complete support also tends to require a fair amount of power input and a computer/robot/crewman to monitor it. I have seen this described as being too "fiddly" to be as efficient as desired.

2. Given that your operational duration is ~8 months and you are CT-inspired, I would suggest as an alternative that you borrow a page from the Beltstrike module and just lay in 3dt of long-term life support supplies. It means canned goods, bottled water, and tanks of oxygen instead of fresh fruits and vegetables every day, but 3dt would only set you back KCr450 and would provide ~9 person-years worth of food, water, and atmo without having to hire a gardner or run grow lights off the powerplant constantly. You have to return to a starport or spaceport eventually for fuel; you might as well stock up on groceries while you are there (and frankly, 2dt/6py @ KCr300 would probably be sufficient for what you are doing with this design, freeing up 1dt for other purposes). For color, I refer to the dedicated storage space as "The Ship's Pantry" as it is not part of The Ship's Locker. YMMVIYTU, of course.

FF&S2 gives numbers of a minimum of 7.1 Td/person to 107 Td/person for long term life support.

I like it, but...it is kind of claustrophobic and a bit small. If your going to live in a rock in space, it better be rather spacey, and a 50 ton ship ain't. It would be good for a criminal or someone on the run. But the fact that it has room for a shuttle or a gig that could land on world.

I'm wondering if that compact design could benefit from 'tip-out' style expandable sections, think collapsed 'accordion' shipping containers, that could be pressurized when said rock is in a stable orbit-stationary mooring.

Mind such would need-be retracted and safely stowed before the modest cabin could look for greener pastures.

interesting idea...could certainly result in some spectacular views (which is what many cabins are all about)
