I like your first design but I'd also keep the second if all the details add up. With as many clans and factions, the Vargr are guaranteed to have numerous ship classes designed to perform the same job. I don't agree that one design is more "Vargr" than the other, although the first does remind be of a Voltron lion .

Much better Far-Trader, much, it really looks like a Vargr Corsair now, and I'd go with a third fin, more fins, more Vargr fun.

That's probably where the head was coming from, it was reminding me of something along that line

Ships with Forward swept wings also screams Varger to me. The look and use of Centauri ships in B5 always had the same effect.

If I were a Vargr, I'd pull all but two of the low berths to make more room for the loot.

Alternately you can fill the low berths with loot such as important passengers worth ransoming...
