Checking in from Storm Central...

Weathered it well; I still have mostly power, no home net connection, leeching bandpass at work to write this.

I haven't made a final decision yet - it's going to depend in part on when I get net back - but I'm leaning toward doing a double issue for December, and skipping November - there's no telling how long it'll take to clean up communications links in this area, and I was pretty much in the heart of the storm.

There's a lot of disruption in the area, but I came through surprisingly unscathed - we lost one leg of the three-phase power from the street, and SOME of my outlets are out - but the lights and the refrigerator are still on. No hot water, and no net connection, but landline telephone is OK. Cell service is spotty, and where the spots are depends on which network you're looking at - where I am, there's strong Verizon signal, weak AT&T with no 3G or 4G, and nothing from Sprint or T-Mobile.

There's already partial transit restoration, but no telling how long until full restoration.

Manhattan below 39th Street has no power unless the building has a generator.

Like with Irene last year, we know we got hit - but this year, we apparently had a better plan; we're already far more recovered - in some respects - after little more than a day than we were weeks after Irene.

I'll be back when I get back; it's going to depend on factors clearly out of my control - but I'm definitely OK!

Glad to hear you are OK and the disruption (on the grand scale of things) is not too bad. It makes me think that for me, lost internet would be worse than not having a fridge!

I hear my home area (State College, PA) got a lot of rain and wind, but other than having my parrot evacuated (we have a *good* pet-sitter) things seem to be alright. I'll know when I come back from Cleveland, when my wife is recovered from past and perhaps future surgeries.

I've seen pics of New York, and it looks bad there.

It reminds me of Hurricane Agnes, all those long years ago.

Have a nice day!

Glad to see you getting through it, Jeff! The ABC (_our_ ABC, here: http://www.abc.net.au/news) has a link to before-and-after pics along the coastline. Frightening really; some houses are just... GONE! With an estuary left behind.
