Chicago-ish, looking for a tabletop group to play or discuss

The dream is meeting once a week for a few hours in the evening, with some expectation of development/convo between sessions. As a player I can help get books into players'/ref's hands. As a ref I'm used to working with big laminated maps and a wiki for the game, so I'm down to help with that.

As a player I'm pretty ambivalent to which ruleset we use or era our game is set in; I'm well set with digital material but I'd gather any books/materials I'd need and adapt.

I'd prefer to play, but I'd run if I had to.

I'm in the far south burbs but I'm willing to drive a ways. I could host if necessary.

If we can't get together to play, I'm also interested in forming a working group that meets now and then in-person to support any Traveller projects we have ongoing.

As I grew up in Dolton, but now live near Waukegan, just how far into the south suburbs are you? Homewood, Lynwood, or closer in?

In the Tinley/I-80 area; any further south and it's cornfields. But I'm well-placed to jump on highways. I just moved back a few months ago and will likely be local for a year, at least.

I have a high school buddy in that area, so it comes out at around 2 hours or so from me. Presently, I cannot manage more than an hour in a car, so driving down to that area is not on the cards for me driving myself. I may have some stuff to test in the near future though, and having someone else test them would not be a bad idea. I am retired, and have been since 1978, so I am free most of the time. However, I do have good days and bad days when it comes to operating.

I gotcha. I'm down to drive up that way, so if we got a quorum my being down here isn't a deal breaker, perhaps.

If I can be helpful in testing something out or just being another set of eyes, of course I'm happy to. My day gig is as a principal UX architect & researcher so if we're talking designs or software... you might get more than you bargained for. ;)

I'm down in Wilmington, south of Joliet. I've met Dale (timerover51) before. I'd drive for a game of Traveller.

There's also several gaming shops in the area.

The one closest to you is Amazing Fantasy in Frankfort. I've played a demo of D&D5 there. More of a comic book shop, but they game there.

Wandering Dragon to the west in Plainfield. All kinds of gaming, plus an escape room. I've played X-Wing miniatures here. They have an auction twice a year.

The Dragon's Refuge in Bourbonnais to the south. They have a big Pathfinder group here. I've been to a couple of games. They were making a table for Star Wars Legion last time I was there.

And Game's Plus in Mount Prospect. Way up north. Haven't been there in years, but I found a bunch of old Traveller books when I did. They have an auction that you can pick up stuff that's out of print.

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch. I know there's a place in Naperville because I played a Federation Commander demo there. But I can't remember the name of it.

Ahhhh, close.

I've played a few DDAL games at AF in Frankfort, and browsed in the one in Tinley. There's a relatively new Gaming Goat about a 3 minute drive from where I'm staying. I've been into the Wandering Dragon but never played there, and have visited every place you've named at least a few times over the years. I really like Games Plus... definitely a ton of Traveller stuff there. And so on.

I try to patronize the game stores when I buy physical product and there might be willing bodies there for a Traveller game, but the last campaign I ran all my players were newbies. It's not bad, but I'd like to do something different for my next game ( playing or running ); it'd be nice not to have to teach everyone everything.

As far as where to run goes... over the last few years I tend to run games in hotel lobbies, as strange as that sounds. I got the idea at GenCon years ago, and really a good hotel lobby/bar/cafe area has everything you might need as long as you don't mind spending a little money on food etc.

I knew I'd forgotten a few. Yeah, there's a new Gaming Goat in Bourbonnais, too. And Grapple Games in New Lenox and Bourbonnais.

I've got rulebooks for every version of Traveller except Hero and T5. I'm working my way through Mongoose Traveller ver. 2, and it's pretty much Classic Traveller Plus from what I can tell.

As far as time-wise, my work is wonky. One day I can work 4 hours, the next day it's 12 hours. It's a pretty haphazard schedule, but at least I have 2 days off on the weekends now. Although, you're probably less than a half hour away from my work, so I can just swing down I-80, when I'm done for the day.

My problem is that I cannot safely go more than an hour away from home, without possibly endangering myself and those others on the road. I am going to try and make it to Games Plus in Mount Prospect with some stuff, but that is as far as I will try.

Driving up to Mt. Prospect might be an option, then. I know Games Plus has space to play, though I've never been back in that section.

As far as virtual options go... eh. I'm glad they're out there and I know many people enjoy them, and they're great resources. I've never been able to have the same kind of experience over one of those services as I can across the table - for me it's not just about playing Traveller; it would also be about the banter and whatnot, the experience of getting together across a table.

I'm up north in the land of cheese and beer (just northwest of Milwaukee), so I couldn't make it down for a weekly game. Could most likely do monthly (which sucks for continuity, but it's probably the best I could do).

I'm running a game now, but if it ends after the first adventure (I hope it doesn't, but one never can tell), I can referee. I don't think I'm capable of running two campaigns at the same time.

CT, MT, T5, or MongTrav2. I don't really know T5, but I'd love to give it a shot.

I'd go for a meetup at Games Plus.

Would you be interested in a Friday night around Tinley as well?

I wouldn't mind giving that a shot, either.

I'm definitely down for a Games Plus meetup. Fridays... Fridays aren't great for every week and Mondays are taken, but I could do an every other Friday thing.

So. Our spectacular every-other Friday thing. I'll see what I can do about attracting some interest from Traveller players hereabouts. Do you have a perfect group size in mind?

And forays to Games Plus notwithstanding, anyone else reading here within driving distance of the far south side of Chicago interested? Tempted?
