Close Structure Hull Configuration

Hello all,

TNE and CT have a hull configuration identified as close structure. Unfortunately, I can not seem to visualize what the hull would look like.

In MT there is a hull configuration identified as irregular which is described as "A dispersed, modular exterior not clearly definable as any one of the other possible configurations." Is this hull the same as the close structure in CT and TNE.

T20 (QLI-T200001) Design Sequence p. 256 also has a configuration titled Close Structure which is described as "A Close Structure is only partially streamlined. The term is used for vessels that consist of a number of similarly or differently shaped structures joined without significant projections."

Can someone please provide a source or a description for what a close structure looks like?

I have always taken it as a catch-all category for any non-dispersed structure hull that doesn't fit any of the other convenient shape categories. For example, in Star Wars, the Corellian Corvette (Rebel Blockade Runner seen in the opening scene of "A New Hope") would probably fall into the Close Structure Category. It has several different shaped components to the hull that are all closely joined together. The Sulaco from Aliens, would also probably be in this category.

Thank you for the reply and from your description I'm guessing the T20 description is a close fit. Also thank you for the two examples.

USS Enterprise from Star Trek is a close structure.
The Gazelle is a close structure.

Hello aramis,

USS Enterprise from Star Trek is a close structure.
The Gazelle is a close structure.

I've got the blue prints for both original Enterprise and the Enterprise-A from the Wrath of Khan, I think. I'm guessing that Battlestar Galactica is also a close structure.

Than you too for providing references to hulls following into the category of close structures.

Hello Mike Wightman,

I always imagine a close structure as being like a stack of different sized boxes stuck together.

Thank you, once again, for answering one of my pleas for assistance. Stacking different sized boxes together fits, at least I think so, with the T20 definition of a number of similarly or differently shaped structures joined without significant projections.

Yep. Many of the ships of the fleet (in either version) also qualify.
