Commercial ship crewing

I agree emergency medicine could be cared by an autodoc, but for any other treatment, emotions are as important as temperatura or blood presure for a good diagnostic.

You are considering TL 7 diagnostic tech. In that case, true. In Trav the postulated diagnostic ability increases with TL until you have the autodoc which can diagnose without aid. Emotions are irrelevant for actual disease or injury diagnosis. They CAN cloud the persons judgment and data given to a med person. Emotions are only useful in diagnosing psych.

By clicking at the quote reference (the arrow in the quote) you'd also reach it, but thanks anyway.

You are VERY welcome.

Emotions are very relevant in disease (not so much, if at all for injury, here I agree with you) diagnostics:

  • Chest pain may well be a heart attack or a panic attac, and EKG does not always rule out any of them
  • High blood presure may be treated with antihipertensive drugs or with tranquilizers, depending on how do you see the patient...
  • Pain killers may be reinforced with tranquilizers, instead of more analgesics, depending on how do you see tha patient...

And the list could be endless...

Is that depending on how do you see the patient what an autodoc might not be able to judge, as judgement is a matter of self-awareness, more than raw intellect capability (understanding intellect as logical reasoning capability. Of course, YMMV, as intellect is quite hard to define).

Chest pain may well be a heart attack or a panic attac, and EKG does not always rule out any of them

BUT, viewing the heart (a la echocardiogram) DOES

High blood presure may be treated with antihipertensive drugs or with tranquilizers, depending on how do you see the patient...

MOST is misdiagnosed currently as we don't understand the underlying causes due our embryonic knowldge of human bio & genetics (TL 7 tech)

Pain killers may be reinforced with tranquilizers, instead of more analgesics, depending on how do you see tha patient...

Because we don't currently understand what is the cause. See TL comment above.

Like I stated before. You are assuming a static level of knowledge (arrested TL) like much of Trav rules.

So, if one assumes static tech from now, of course you end up with static tech.

Something that is better addressed in MgT.

In those cases, mostly is because emotions are somatized as symptoms (or even as signs), leading to a confusing syndrome, not because we don't understand how those medical processes are.

I don't assume a static tech, but that human nature and emotions will not change so much. As you said in the other thread I quoted:

barring a radical shift in basic human nature (which history teaches isn't in the cards) over the next few thousand years,

Incorrect. We REALLY understand very little about the true causes of most illness. At the bio-molecular & genetic level.

I don't assume a static tech,

Well, in the area of medicine your views would REQUIRE a very static level of tech.
