I am most humbly chastised at improperly addressing you in past posts. However, since I am just a lowly submarine sailor I think I'll stick with the less formal address of kaladorn. Easier to type don't you know.

Hello.
So the only people lowlier than you would be in a bathasphere (Teh Teh).
I'm in a silly mood today.
For all those people that think this is a serious board "you wrong" it's just a forum for all kinds, today i'm in a silly mood, tomorrow who knows.
Bye.

Hello Lionel,

Yep, the only people that would be lower would be those in a bathysphere or bathyscaphe. But we are both lower than whale, er uhm, oh never mind I'd be censored if I said the word anyway;).

Modern day battleships? I thought the last battleships produced were in 1945.
Though the New Jersey did have a tendency to become active on a regular basis they have all been retired again. (For over 10 years AFAIK.) The only thing close to a Battleship produced since WWII was the Russian Kirov. Since WWII the only ships designed for direct combat action without using aircraft were the Russian guided missile Cruisers and Submarines. Everything else may have a secondary anti-ship capability but has the main mission of supporting a Carrier, ASW and/or Anti-air. Even the Russian main anti-ship weapon was land based bombers. But Battleships would require escorts in the modern Navy to keep the pesky aircraft and subs away so they can concentrate on destroying the enemy's ships.

The same holds true for Traveller. While a Drednaught can make fast work of small ship squadrons its main function is to destroy Capital ships. Therefore it would be a good idea to bring along some escorts to shoot up the enemy's fighters/light craft, conduct the actual planetary bombardment and other nonsense so the Capital ships can be ready to trash someone else's Capital ships.

While not suggesting a Cruiser as the *choice* of escort, keep in mind that Battleships DO generally get an escort. In modern day, they usually have a bunch of other ships travelling with them, though perhaps not so large a group as a carrier would have.

If I'm not mistaken, carriers sometimes have Aegis Cruisers deployed in their defence. The CV doesn't have enough firepower to deter *serious* foes (not counting the air group, which sometimes has ops restricted) and needs the extra air def.

I'm sure that a Traveller BB force wants Aegis or equivalent airdef (spacedef) capabilities against fighter strikes and SDBs, etc.

Plus smaller vessels act as advanced warning, scouting, and screening forces for the Wall of Battle or for the heavy carriers.
