CT Combat Systems

Howdy folks!

I've only got Book 1 for personal combat rules. Could someone please outline what the other options (Snapshot, etc) are like?

I can fill in some.

Snapshot is basically the CT combat system for close combat. Characters have a number of action points based on INT and DEX. Actions cost points, but the basic to hit system is the same.

AHL is then next evolution, Snapshot like, but with seperate to hit and armor penetration. I've never owned a copy, so I can't speak to it, except to say that from what I have read it is what the Striker combat system came from.

Striker is the most developed CT combat system. Seperate to hit and armor penetration and vehicle combat rules. The rules are designed for larger tactical combat, so no individual action points.

Hope it helps,

Rob

P.S. I just noticed you're right next door. Are you running a game in the Champaign-Urbana area?

There is also Book 4, Mercenary. New skills and weapons

AHL and Striker have essentially the same combat system. No action points as Snapshot, but there are initiative rules the resemble those in GDW's System 7 Napoleonic rules.

In our CT games (Murph's and mine) we ran Striker combat. Simpler and cleaner than Snapshot. Also the wounded, incapacitated, dead damage system is easier to administer (and IMHO both more realistic and playable) than Book 1damage. IIRC the house rule was that small arms damage was capped at +(# of Book1 dice) after armor was subtracted. That is, Striker says a Gauss rifle has +7 on the damage roll, but we never permitted more than +4 (Book 4 has 4D damage dice) after armor was subtracted.

Thanks for the info, folks. Follow-up question: I sometimes prefer abstract combat to pushing counters on a grid. Are these systems playable without maps?

Ranger, sorry no game at the moment. :( However, I would be up trying some High Guard/Trillion Credit Squadron (and could probably find another player or two). Feel free to PM me or email jeff (at) myguard.net .

Well, Snapshot is just the book 2 combat system with a 1.5 meter movement grid and action points to allow you to play out boarding actions (or bar room brawls). If you just used range bands, your left with the book 2 to hit system.

Like I said, I've never owned AHL, so I don't know how it's range system is set up.

Striker changes the basic to hit system, by making it a basic 8+ to hit at effective range (like book 2) but effective range is different for each weapon system (Long range is 10+ to hit, and extreem is 12+).

If you want use the Striker to hit system with range bands, then you can use the MT weapons tables, as they return to the range band mechanism (sort of), but it has some other quirks that some people don't like (I've never used it, so I can't really comment on them).

Exactly like Striker, except ranges are in 1.5m deck squares instead of 10 m units.
