CT ... Necessities

I'll scan through JTAS 1-12 reprint and list a few notable articles, to give you an idea of how cool these things are:

Animal Encounters - Lots of 'em. Detailed beasties for your game...even the "Alien" from the Alien movies!

Computer Programming Rules - that were left out of the LBB's, printed in JTAS-1.

Board Game Variants - for many of the GDW Traveller board games (like Imperium). Extended rules.

Adventures - Many Amber Zone adventures, ready to play for your game.

Equipment & Weapons - Lots of cool stuff, like TDX explosive, Vacc Suits, Battle Dress and powered armor.

Vehicles & Starships - Several detailed starships with deckplans and complete stats and interior descriptions. Vehicles detailed too!

Cold Weather Rules - includeing Cold Weather Clothing.

TNS - News items you can use in your game for "reality" or even adventure ideas.

Underwater Rules - including equipment.

Robots - complete rules and sample robots.

Detailed Worlds - a couple of articles showing you how to make the planets your characters travel to "alien" and "interesting". Check out the complete world write-up on Victoria.

Belting Rules - a system for players prospecting asteroids.

Trade & Commerce Rules and articles. Speculation without a starship. Exchange Rates. Using the Stock Exchange in your game--things like that.

Third Imperium background articles - on things like emperors and the Fifth Frontier War.

Referee Advice - articles on making a believable universe, NPCs, and PC backgrounds and homeworlds - things like that.

Detailing the "Special" category of Psionics Rules.

Imperial Interstellar Scout Service detailed.

Sample Starport and write-up.

Aliens for your Traveller game - several of 'em.

Military Academy for Marine and Army characters.

Rules for Poltroonery and Courts Martial during CharGen.

Extended Medical Treatment rules for Traveller.

NPCs galore.

And that's not all of it ... just the stuff that caught my eye as I flipped through the first reprint book.

Trust me ... GET ALL THREE OF THEM!

If you've been tettering on investing $75 into the three JTAS reprints, then stop your drunk monkey routine. Get them. GET them. GET THEM!

They are WONDERFUL CT resources. They are rules expansions. They are beautiful CT supplements.

They are simply incredible.

They will expand your game. They will make your game better.

Rules for things like Vacc Suits, picking locks, medical treatment ... new equipment, new beasties for your planets, new starships, new weapons ... adventures, campaign notes, guidelines for creating careers, detailing planets, character background, and running NPCs in a game.

And so much more.

I highly recommend the JTAS reprints. They should be considered a "must" for your CT collection.

Get 'em.

GRAND CENSUS

GRAND SURVEY

I have been reluctant to buy DGP's Grand Survey and Grand Census because I own The Worldbuilder's Handbook. So many people have said that the WBH is basically just GS and GC put together.

Well, yes, and no.

I just purchased both GS and GC (got them in the mail today!), and I figured if there were just dupilcates of what I already owned in the WBH, then I'd just turn around and sell 'em.

Whelp, now that I've looke at 'em, am I sellin 'em?

No-way. Uh-uh. Ain't gonna happen. Nada.

These books are brilliant. Is there some overlap in GC/GS and WBH?

Sure there is.

But... I noticed that there's a lot of stuff covered in one and not the other. (Two examples are the in-depth rules for Traveller starship sensors and the extensive write-up on Vacc Suits). That's a lot different from what you get in the WBH.

And, GC/GS is "tuned" much more for CT than WBH (which was written for MT).

There's a hell of a lot of good stuff in GS and GC, that is either not in WBH or is in WBH but presented in a different (sometimes expanded) fashion in GS and GC.

I recommend 'em. I recommend both of them.

And, I'm very glad I shelled out the cash to get them.

They're both going to add to my game.

And, I'm going to read them cover to cover.

RECOMMENDATION: Yep, they're expensive, but they're worth it. Get 'em.

Backinna day I got into Mercenary and High Guard, and might have continued with the others...

But I've gone retrograde with my Traveller, so now the only things I call essential are:

1)LBB1-3 2nd Ed, or the Traveller Book
2)access to one or more Traveller lists for feedback when considering one of the gaps in the rules (the issues with pulse lasers, missiles and sand all come to mind.)

I don't run 3I, so I don't need any of the background for it, EXCEPT where I think it sheds light on the LBB rules as *intended* where things are ill-put, or where there are lacunae.

TTB or Starter Traveller.

And MT's Imperial Encyclopedia and Referee's Companion. They boil down $250 worth of Classic Traveller into two books for about $16.

TTB, if you don't know much about the CT Universe, as there are some glaring ommissions in ST (eg. some ships not illustrated & explainations not given to things indicated in the text). However, Tables & Charts book is invaluable if you want to play CT...The debate continues...
