CT point-based chargen

jappel

SOC-13
I'm off to dig up the Andy Slack articles, but in the meantime thought I'd throw this out: has anyone developed or come across a decent point-based chargen system for CT covering all the skills and careers, including Books 4-7 and supplement 4? Some of the prospective Traveller players I'm cultivating are interested in the system but reaaalllly don't want to give up point-based chargen.

By the way, my holiday gifts to my gaming group? Planning to give them the QLI CT book 1-3 reprints.

/cue evil laugh

TIA,

John (who's off to waste some work time on Google)

EDIT: fixed annoying typo in title

Points based character generation for CT?

Set every characteristic at 6 and then give ten points to buy skills or characteristics, plus four points per term served.

Ignore automatic skills.

Or,

roll characteristics normally and then grant four points per term to be spent on characteristics or skills.

Promotion may be bought once per term for one point.

Thought you'd like that.

I'm pretty sure this is the Crucible Campaign featured in recent months on Freelance Traveller.

I can see where I might want to make a few tweaks, but I think we've got a winner, ladies & gentlemen...

Been playing with that one for a while

Good for online play and the point buy could help design balanced character generation in CT+
Take a look at the combat system as well...it's got shades of the CT+ combat threads ;)

Still more complicated than I'd prefer. Why not something simple like this?

Characteristics: You have 42 points. Assign them to the six characteristics as you like with no less than 2, nor more than 12, points in any characteristic.

Skills: Now, you have 15 skill points. Assign them to skills, increases to characteristics (max of 15) or rolls on the "Mustering Out" table for your chosen career. Each skill point buys you +1 to a skill level, +1 to a characteristic, or +1 roll on the mustering out table. Generally, it is helpful to pick a career and choose skills/characteristic increases from the that career's tables, but...with the Ref's approval...you can pick any available skill in the game, but be prepared to come up with a good story for how your PC got it.

Age: Pick an appropriate age given your characteristics and skills.

Background: Make up something! Either do it now or as it comes up during the game, but remember anything you make up becomes something you have to roleplay and that the Ref can use against you when you least expect it.

Oh, and everything is *always* subject to Referee approval. ;)

Just downloaded and am digesting the "Traveller Plus Book 9" info from the Crucible site -- I like it, so far. I've always been a bit heretical -- I've always preferred a little more "choice" WRT skills & char gen.

The scaling of points for UPPs and skills seems to be fairly well-balanced compared to Book 4+ characters -- I gen'd a few chars to get a feel for it. A lot more flexibilty as far as character age, as well -- maybe too much? Overall happy medium would most likely be just a few more referee- or campaign-specific limitations on skill choices, char age, wealth and benefits, etc.

BTW, I also like the "Book 10" small arms design sequences, as well as the artwork on the site -- especially the starship design renderings.

Attention: Marc/Avery this is something you should look at!

Love this work, I do disagree that ranks should be freely chosen, I would adopt the ranks from the Advanced Career Generation tables and assign them some minucle value in terms of points, as I have always equated rank to prestige and tying it into the skill acquistion process.

One easy way would map out the Ranks with Character Points Level.

But, I guess the author is aiming at universal simplicity and he has achived it. Hopefully, Marc looks seriously at this proposal, as bringing Traveller to a level of simplicity would generatate a wider audience and I just love how it puts role playing rather than roll playing front and centre.
