CT Starship dimensions

Blue Ghost

SOC-14 5K
Knight
Is there any data on the exterior dimensions for CT ships; i.e. what are the lengths and beam of a scout ship, patrol craft, SDB, Broadsword, Marava class etc.?

I'm familiar with their internal layouts, and I have a rough idea of their actual sizes, but I'd like to know the actual dimensions of these beasts. :)

Thanks much for any reply.

Traders and Gunboats (Supp 7) has what you're looking for, I believe.

You can also generally ignore anything to the right of the decimal point (except the occasional 0.5), what with differences between shipyards, architectural license, and the design tolerances of 20% on objects defined in multiples of cubic meters and hundreds of metric tons.

(really needs updating).

Beware, many official plans are wrong.

Andrew,

Maybe you can clear up something for me. Why is it the 200 ton Far Trader is always depicted as so much smaller than the 200 ton Free Trader?

Your page isn't the only place I've seen that before. They have the same volumn, and the two vessels seem to be about the same width. Yet, in several Traveller sources, the Far Trader is this small ship compared to other 200 ton vessels.

Plus, I know there was a mix up in Sup 7, and the Far Trader was depicted with deckplans for a 400 ton hull. So, if anything, the ship should be bigger.

In my case, the Marava is correct, but the Beowulf isn't.

The Marava is an easier hull to fix, and this was actually done by GDW for TNE Guilded Lily.

It is possible to take the plans from DGPs Starship Operators Manual and treat the grid as 1.0m instead of the stated 1.5m. The plans become about the right volume, but the hullform gets really scrunched. I know SJG has done a version of this hull for GURPS Traveller, but I don't recall if they rectified the volume.

The two-deck version from Traveller's dawn, as found in Snapshot, works a bit better but can be interesting to make work as a smooth hullform.

The Alexandria, published by FASA in Adventure Class Ships Volume 2, is a 200-ton deckplan, but is a fairly simple shape.

The Type A plans done by Judges Guild in Starships & Spacecraft are a bit crude, but fairly close to proper volume. Also closer to a needle than a Wedge. The Type R in that set is similar, and quite a departure from the bullet of GDW's March Harrier.

The Salamander Type A is Comstar/Avenger's design, with much of its cargo capacity in a pair of yard-dismountable pods.

I've done a Type A and Type A2 in basic box-tube. Let's see:
40m long, 6m tall, 12m wide (13 if armed).

I did her up for use with Snapshot counters and MoTrav characters...

Yup, and by about the same ratio as the original A2 plans.

The A2 plans are for a 400 ton ship.

Hmm...I always thought the look of the Beowulf plans in the SOM were incredible. When I first saw them, I said, "Now THIS is the way deckplans are supposed to look!"

It's a pitty they're off.

What's wrong with these guys writing the books? They don't follow their own rules? Simply count of the squares you're using and figure volumn. It ain't that hard!

The A2 plans are for a 400 ton ship.

So are the A plans in SOpM, roughly.

Counting squares is tedious, though I make a point of doing so during deckplan design. What got me counting squares on the A was the set of standard class ship silhouettes (also in SOpM if memory serves). I knew from previous counting sessions that the Type R was about the right size, so when the much wider-hulled A and A2 silhouettes were the same length as the R despite being half the volume, I knew that DGP hadn't fixed the A2 and had probably mucked up the A. No real solution suggested itself until TNE came along with its 2m floor grid, though that does make the A look rather stumpy.

I think GT did eventually fix the A, but I haven't verified it yet.

Okay, I've updated the page with newer pics.

Updates look good, but it stills seems you've got some problems there. Just by eyeballing it, the 200 ton yacht looks like a 400 toner. The 100 ton scout looks like a 300 toner. And the 40 ton pinnace looks like it could hold its won with the 200 ton ships.
