Cybertech.. How do you handle it in CT?

To give others a taste of what I & Ran are talking about...

It is the dawn of the sixth millennium and the skies are darkening, for the suns themselves are fading. Humans reached the stars long ago, building a Republic of high technology and universal emancipation — and then squandered it, fought over it, and finally lost it. A new Dark Age has descended on humanity, for the greatest of civilizations has fallen and even the stars die. Feudal lords rules the Known Worlds, vying for power with fanatic priests and scheming guilds, all under the watchful eye of the Phoenix Emperor.

I'm using ShadowRun in MTU, including the cyberwear. But I'm making it clear that it's just not done the way it is in the ShadowRun universe. Anyone that would have a perfectly good limb lopped off and replaced with cyberwear is messed up in the head, and people won't want him around. It's okay if you have an industrial accident and need the limb replaced, but it still creeps people out. Being part of society is a *big* part of the game. Sociopaths don't do very well. :)

^ Definitely not acceptable to the upper classes! Not when they can afford to have cloned limbs grown for them.

On that thought, maybe drop the character's SOC by 1 for every implant or part. That will reflect the strong public sentiment against cyberwear.

Or do what I did, have a mad cyborg go ripping through the player's favorite backwater port after being accused of a string of gruesome murders, requiring the local law enforcement to hunt him down and prosecute him with extreme prejudice in the middle of the street (witnessed by the players). Then came the comments of the crowd, "Heard the 'trodes drove him mad", "He was a fine fella until he got that gizmo stuck to his stump", and "That monster! All metal and wires; he deserved what he got!". Sort of put things in perspective for them.

Kafka, I've done the FS LARP thing. Unfortunately, it ended up being just D&D with guns; not the real flavor of FS or gothic traveller.

It was cool playing with one of the designers though. Greenberg really brought the setting to life; it was like playing in the Dune universe with all the color and detail Herbert wrote. The scenario we played was full of political intrigue and double crosses. A really good gaming experience.

I like the Fading Suns setting, one that I find can be easily imagined. Darker than Traveller has ever been. You can have anything, including cybertech but be prepared to pay the price.

Let the players have their new shiny limbs, but the more they take the more they suffer. FS has Hubris, Urge and Fealty for those that use and abuse their powers, Cyberpunk has cyberpychosis for those that metal-up. Use one or combine all those ideas.

Would like to try some FS/Traveller crossover at some point. Take the best of both Universes.

Leighton, I am re-reading some of your work on the Universal Church in Bolivar. Surely, there must be a Phoenix throne lurking somewhere in the New Era.

Kafka,

I was trying to give it a little Hispanic late-medieval/Renaissance feel. I could've expanded more, particularly onj the religious aspect, but without taking up a whole issue I tried to get the salient points down.

There may well be a throne somewhere ..... in the old Ducal Palace ....

Leighton...perhaps, a throne belonging to the House Hazat? I really like what you did in S-GK and look forward to the CD ROM with readable and hence quotable formats.

I have always visualized that we could run Fading Suns somewhere very Rimward in the OTU where it is almost strictly Solomani and the legends of Old Urth be transfered onto a world in the farthest reaches. Stargates remain a problem but I can't see the reason why we cannot subsitute it for Jump Drive assuming these worlds arise during the Long Night or TNE. Both offer hope that the prophet was just a soothsayer during troubled times and expansion is the only way forward.

Perhaps even the Changed represent some sort of freakish spinoff of the Dominate that misjumped. Afflections and Stigmatas could remain the same but with potential Virus or social consquences. As Traveller often postulates that psionics is a science but perhaps it is something more...

I've been a Traveller "kludgemeister" for quite a while...and have been really excited by some of the material like FS and the Star Drive Alternity stuff. I glom all of that and bundle it into MTU. The mention of stargates is one our group puzzled through by having them be ENORMOUS jump-bubble generators, located just outside the 100D range of gas giants. Ships simply glide through the middle of the gate and the jump bubble forms around the craft, depositing it in jumpspace.
The problem is always getting BACK. Heh. Unless you're sure of where you're headed, and have enough resources to build another gate...yer stuck. A nice piece of high-level ultratech, but one inherently upsetting to the OTU (which has NEVER been a problem for us...).
I also glommed on to an old piece of gamery produced by TriTac Games called Fringeworthy years and years ago. It always seemed like the guys from the Stargate: SG-1 franchise musta read that, too...
