Well thanks for the heads up on Ringworld. I would like to see a Forbidden Planet prequel. The landing of the Belephron the loss of the crew how Dr. Morbius and his daughter survived and built Robbie.

In another thread around here I posted what Niven and Pournelle had to say about Ringworld and the movie licensing. Long story short, years ago Niven sold the rights to the film, evidently for a pittance, and the guy who bought them has been sitting on them for years. He knows the value of what he has, and from what they were saying, he's not easy to work with. So, no Ringworld movie, etc.

If they hadn't messed up the Halo movie we would have at least seen a ringworld, with the possibility of a half decent story with it. Oh well. Seems they can't make a movie out of a videogame that actually has a vaguely original (as far as films are concerned, at least) plot.

I really want a Stainless Steel Rat film. In the 70's James Coburn would have been perfect. 7 or 8 years ago George Cooney / Angelina Jolie would have been ideal.

I can't think of any up and coming actors with the right combination of charm and suave (or danger and boobs). Maybe Chris Evans might do....

But those rights have been sat on for decades.

A bit like Consider Phlebas...

Having said that, P F Hamilton's Greg Mandel series would make a decent line in affordable ITV telemovies, in the vein of Sharpe.

How in the world can you say that's brilliant in the way of continuity?

Obviously, nothing anybody says is going to turn you onto the new Trek, Dan, and that's fine. You can be the single science fiction fan that doesn't see the movie.

But, yes, it's a brilliant idea for a reboot (referring to the spoiler, up thread), and it's "brilliant" because it's the perfect universe to do such a thing in.

There's a quick scene, in the latest preview, where Nero, the bad guy, is talking to the young Kirk, telling him, "Captain Kirk was a great man, but that's another time, another place."

Spock and Nero, evidently, are both from the original timeline. The young characters from the new crew are all from the alternate timeline.

Yes, brother. If you're going to reboot a franchise and change a bunch of things, THAT'S the way to do it in the Trek universe. It's perfect.

It's another "Teenagers in Space" SciFi flick. About as interesting as "Wing Commander" for anyone above age 25. No wait, WC at least had Prochnow re-doing his Submarine Commander for some fun-effects.

Between that and my dislike for Kirk and TOS I guess I'll be fan Nr. 2 NOT watching this thing. Simply because to me so far it looks like a very bad film.

I have no plans to see it. Using a plot device that's been done to death to justify making a "new" Trek movie is, IMO, pretty damn lame. Kinda like they way they brought Spock back to life. Yawn.

Thanks Andrew sounds like it could be good if it happens. As far as the new trek I would like to wait and see. I only wish that they can put together real writers for star trek again like Larry Niven, Harlan Ellison, and David Gerrold.

Well, the novels had Han and Leia get married and have kids; SW 7, 8 & 9 could be about them.

I would rather read about the kids' kids without going the way of teenage angst that so much of Lucas' devotes to in other trilogies. He recently denied that he was contemplating 7,8,9. However, I once knew someone who was close to Lucas and apparently he wrote scripts for all these possibilities back before A New Hope and would have it go all the way to 12.

He is probably hedging his bets and going to see how the live action TV show will go. If it keeps Star Wars in the public's Minds Eye (pun intended) and the redoing of the whole series in 3D still rakes in more money. He will probably consider releasing those scripts...for Lucas has maintained that he has stories to tell from the Star Wars universe but they are just too expensive to make...so he wants near flawless CGI take over.

I don't think I would include Gerrold in that list. He only ever had 1 thing any good at all.

Well Voyage of the Star Wolf was pretty good read I agree not really the same caliber but he also wrote the Trouble with Tribbles and The Cloud Minders for TOS. In fact all the writers mentioned wrote for TOS. (OK Niven wrote an episode for the animated series based on the his short story the soft weapon with spock pretty much in the roll of the puppeteer)
