DGP stuff?

Just one more question:

what be the legal matters should someone want to publish more MT material? Should he talk to MWM? to mr Sanger? to both of them?

Marc only. Marc is the sole and exclusive source of licenses.

If he doesn't have a license to publish the derivative works, then he is still subject to viable litigation.

Mongoose, for instance, owns the copyright on MgT that they produced (or had produced as works for hire) - but they can only distribute it during the terms of their license (which they renewed with Marc a while back). Marc, in turn, cannot just up and start distributing MgT copyrighted material without their permission (or risks viable litigation). Note that 'distributing' includes 'for free'.

What would happen if Mr. Sanger launched a kickstarter to publish the DGP materials he has the right to?

At present, Marc could sue him, and would probably win if he did, resulting in him owing enough that he'd likely wind up broke.

A derivative work rights-holder can't publish without permission from the original work's rights-holder, under penalty of law. Punitive damages often are steep enough that it's not worth it.

Now, Marc's web policy would cover Roger simply turning legit PDFs loose for free. But not if there was any kind of charge whatsoever...

Well, as MgT, GT and T5 progress, that stuff becomes more of an irrelevant shadow. At some point someone's going to come up with another really rocking set of supplements with draftsman quality pics as per the lamented vehicle supplement, and it'll be dirt cheap via PDF. What I'm seeing today on the market already puts a lot of that material to shame in terms of aesthetics.

There's already a vast number of products that are driving the DGP stuff into the realm of "obsoletum", which I think is a double edged sword. It would have been nice to have had a lot of that product resurrected and recirculated for the enjoyment of all, but, well, business is business, but, having said all that, a good business model is to satiate demand for a product.

I shrug my shoulders at it now. When I checked SJ Games GT section and strolled through Drivethrough.com and a few other websites of retailers and developers, I think the opportunity for that stuff has come and gone. For the time it was first-rate publishing material for niche game market like Traveller, but now there's tons of quality product out there. It makes me scratch my head even more about this, which is kind of why I brought up the topic again (kind of like Pirates).

Well, I guess maybe now it's time to write it off permanently. I'll withhold personal comments, but boy, would I love to say a few things :D
