Here's a neat little weapon that I first did for Traveller back in 1980 or so after reading an article about a 'Roman candle gun' in a gun magazine. The article was about a patent for a projectile weapon where the rounds were stacked one on another, like a roman candle. With all the media and hoohah over the Australian MetalStorm, I'm reposting this to the guntech list for comment. This weapon was originally conceived as a modern day 'liberator': a simple weapon meant to be provided to indigenous, insurgent forces to be used kill enemies and secure standard firearms from them. Interestingly, players thought this was a neat weapon, and just about everyone bought a few to keep around, just in case.
Military Technologies S-01 Insurgency Weapon.
The S-01 is a five shot, disposable shotgun-type weapon designed to be delivered en masse and at low cost to insurgent forces to provide them with a simple, effective firearms in order to mount operations against the enemy. it is meant as a short term firearm, to be supplemented and replaced by captured arms.
The weapon is comprised of a simple, metal-alloy tube containing 5 round of 20mm SCMITR flechette ammunition, stacked one upon another in the fashion of a roman candle. The metal tube is reinforced by resin impregnated carbon-fiber winding. Rounds are fired sequentially, from a pizeoelectric trigger mechanism. The stock is a simple tube and buttplate that telescopes over the barrel when not in use. a series of cartoon instructions id printed on the weapon explaining how to ready and fire the weapon.
To ready the weapon, one simply opens the buttpad/muzzle cap and then extends the telescoping stock. At the end of its travel, the stock tube articulates 15 degrees to form a rudimentary drop and handgrip, and the trigger unfolds. There is a rudimentary front aiming post composed of a fluorescent fiber-optic bead.
To fire, one simply points at the target and pulls the trigger. The SCMITR flechette has an effective range of beyond 500 meters, and each 'shot' fires 15 of the flechettes spread in a 1 degree arc from the muzzle.
The weapon cannot be reloaded and is disposable.
The weapons is typically delivered in a 5 cm closed cell foam jacket complete with a simple drogue and is designed to survive an impact velocity of 100kph. Normal cost is Cr20, but bulk purchase can reduce this cost significantly.
Surprisingly, this weapon has found favor with a larger audience as an 'emergency back up gun' or in survival kits and the like. In it's collapsed state, the weapons measures a mere 20 cm in length and 3cm in diameter, with a mass of 1.5 kilos. Recoil is sharp, but manageable.
