Double Fire

Piper

SOC-13
Does anyone have any price and size information about the CT Book 2 computer program "Double Fire"? It's listed in the starship combat section, but not on the Computer Software List.
TIA

You've got first edition CT, haven't you? ;)

And welcome aboard Piper

Does first edition also reguire a current power plant rating letter greater than the installed maneuver rating letter to use Double Fire?

And just a little off topic while I'm here, does anyone know which is the correct space for the Generate program? The Software List table has it as 1 space while the TAS form lists it as 2 but the ship's data card example for the Suleiman type S doesn't even have it installed (as if that makes any sense).

Hey Far-Trader,

The Type-S doesn't have Generate because us Scouts can calculate a jump in our sleep!

Thank you, and yes, I do. ;)
Thanks for the welcome. It's been a while since I last played, but it's good to be back. Just show me where to stow my kit while I get settled in. ;)

@ far-trader: Double fire does require a higher power plant rating in the first edition.
FWIW, Generate is space 2 in my book. It doesn't have to be installed. Single-use flight plan cassettes can be substituted. (No idea on how those work or what the price might be).

Thanks, I usually fudge it for 1 or 2 whichever fits better, and call one easy and one hard, and yes Sir Dameon Toth, the Scouts must always insist on doing it the very hard way! No wonder the survival is so low, how many are missing and presumed calculating ;)

As for the preprogrammed self erasing single use cassettes, nobody uses them, at Cr10,000 per Jump number (in 2nd edition) they don't sell well

Cut that to Cr1,000 per Jump number and they might get a few customers.

Hmm, I did some digging and found that the generate program is listed as size 2 in CT 1st edition, but as size 1 in CT 2nd ed., The Traveller Book, and Starter Traveller.

Dan, have a look at the TAS 3 form you are using. How much space does it say the jump programs use?

The reason for asking is that in CT 1st ed. jump 1 requires 1 space, all others 2 spaces.
This was copied onto the early versions of the TAS 3 forms (the ones in CT 2nd ed. and TTB), along with the generate program being 2 spaces (which looks like it is in error by 3 to 1 ;) ).
The TAS 3 form in CT Supplement 12 Forms and Charts has the jump programs corrected, but the generate program is still listed as 2 spaces

In summary, the generate program should only be 1 space.

Yep it's the TAS 3 form with the jump programs spaces being 2 for all but J-1. I'd forgotten that, usually using the book tables which as you say are space = J number. I think you're right on the majority being right this time, even T20 has Generate as 1 "space" for what that's worth since the computers there have about 10x the "space" for programs ;)

I use the software list value based on the supposition that you need to use another program at the same time in the lower capacity computers. As far as that goes, how can a type "A" Free Trader with it's standard Model 1 computer ever fire a missle unless it gives up ability to maneuver? The CPU has 2 spaces. Launch & target each require 1 space which leaves no room for maneuver. As a navy man, the last thing I want in a combat situation is to lose the ability to maneuver. I assume that it is even more critical in the space navy than it is in the wet navy.

Andy,

You can swap programs out between "memory" and "CPU" each phase of combat. Therefore, you only need maneuver during the movement phase. You can then swap in target and launch during the missle phase, and target and predict during the laser phase.

With a model/1 you have six "slots" loaded during any given turn, and can only use two of them in any given phase.

Its the model/1bis that gets really hamstrung.
