CT Only: HandComps and Personal Computers

The data in the PERSONAL COMPUTERS above can be compressed into a table used to generate the basic data, stripped of the player chrome in the text descriptions keyed to each TL.

NOTE: The above Cost and Weight are for PERSONAL (1/0 CPU/Memory) versions; for BUSINESS (1/1 CPU/Memory) versions, multiply the cost by 10 , and double the weight; for MIL-SPEC (1/2 CPU/Memory) versions, multiply the cost by 100 , and quadruple the weight. For all versions, VOLUME [Liters] = 2 x Weight [kg].

Very nice. The progression of tech is to whatever taste one has, although again implantable computers able to run generate can make for a different universe.

My only serious critique is that milspec machines in the six figure range would probably be a bit more resilient then 6+ save as both the next level down from avionics/astronomic ship computers and as tech advances. Perhaps they get two saving throws, or 1 extra saving throw per model number.

With this TL regimen I would be pretty strict on TL repair.

I’d also greatly restrict the ability of these little machines to run starship systems, and require one per function like workstations on later versions. The pilot would need one to input his maneuver program, networking to an engineer computer for each major component, navigator computer hooked to jump drive computer etc. Gunnery stations would need to link to the navigator or pilot machines to get starship maneuver/sensor data, and power plant if energy based.

Probably should have increased battery life due to better energy storage and less power usage.

Not disagreeing, but I was thinking about "Rule 68A" at the time. Personally, I would not be defining "damage" requiring a save (in any case) as "I dropped it" and more like "The rifle bullet hits the Computer instead of the Player" or "The car drove over the backpack containing the computer". That will always be a REF call to the taste of their game.

6+ on 2d6 is a 72% chance of success, so I was OK with "They shot your computer with an ACR, but it still works fine 72% of the time." ;)

[You could be right about the Model Numbers degrading with a failed save ... there is Starship precedent for that.]

Er I wasn’t going there just rolling for immediate functionality like phase failure in ship combat. But your take works too.
