Duke Craig and Daibei question

How about just cutting off all external comm lines? I've yet to see the virus that could propagate via teleportation.... just have all comms physically separate. (Now, there was some thought of their being ways to use the sensors to propagate virus code, but something tells me *that* is a real tough one compared with normal comms lines. It could be done, esp if all raw data is analyzed by the computer and you can hack in that way, but again you could take all sensors offline and do manual data analysis or analysis on really dump systems.

Another possibility is start gradually transfering key interface processing into ROM style computers that cannot be re-written. No 'flash upgrades' anymore, but avoids the virus doing the same. An upgrade requires physical ROM replacement, but is still possible with such a scheme. And much safer.

300-500 tons seems about right. If you want to clip on scout survey sensors and stuff, and some oversized computing (to justify big memory banks or multiple computers aboard), you'll need a bit of space. Good sensors on this kind of ship would probably be expected. Fuel purifiers would be a must as would scoops and atmospheric streamlining and enough Gs of thrust to get you on and off planets.

GRIP is a product of QLI, available from them. It is really an IRC client, but it has a way to make modules and part of it is in making maps. The only downside is limited selection of bits (very much so) and limited to non-existent support anymore (Hunter has bigger fish to fry I guess now). And if you want to use the deckplans outside the tool, you have to cut and paste over in sections via the clipboard. Handy, and not handy, in roughly equal measure.

Campaign Cartographer 2 can probably do it too, but it is a CAD engine and tough to get used to. Post to one of the deckplan threads and ask what software the gearhead geeks use for deckplans.

What I had in mind was for the PCs to cut comms too late- they cut things off, but the Virus is already in the ship's computer banks, and it's spreading from the comms into the rest of the system. Just a thought...

Yeah, I was thinking 400 tons, with big sensors, a couple of laser turrets, a missile turret, and a sandcaster. Four computers aboard- normal three for a jump ship, plus one more that's most of the information in the archive, plus sensors and some cargo space.

Fair. We'll see- if someone else wants to do deckplans I'd be just as glad to hand that duty off.

Wow, thanks for the suggestions guys! I would have responded earlier but the real world asserted its hold over me.

In terms of the size of the ship, I was thinking of making it around the size you are talking... although I find the design sequence in FF+S rather intimidating (it seems like a lot of math).

As to my original infected-computer idea, my original idea was that the ship itself doesn't know its infected until it's a little too late. Then the PC's have to assist the ship by minimizing the infection's growth while the two strains of virus battle for supremacy. Preferably this would take place in jumpspace to add to the crazy cabin fever mood of the adventure.

Actually, I was thinking that the ship's memory may be some what jumbled and incomplete to start with. My rationale being that between battle damage and choosing to disconnect (sometimes by selective, slightly destructive, power surges) to prevent, or at least delay, fighting off a Black Curtain infection the ship's memory is patchy.

Go ahead, twist my arm. Make me haul out that book again...

(By which I mean, if you'd like me to I'd be glad to rough out a design for you with FF&S. Anything else you had in mind for the ship?)

Oh admit it, you were only trying to tie this back to the recent COTI discussion on Jump Space Adventure Seeds..... ;)

If you can get up a good design and deckplans, I'm sure it would be a popular little ship.

Craig

Hey all, I am once again trawling for information for an upcoming game. This time I was wondering if anyone could give me the lowdown on Duke Craig and Daibei?

I don't even know which Megatravller sourcebooks to try to find to get info on them. I'm also a little broke so I was hoping someone on the boards could give me some info?

Like: Was Duke Craig a decent ruler? I get the impression from Survival Margin that he wasn't out to seize the Irridum throne, but was he a decent chap?

Any details or general background info on that region would also be greatly appreaciated.

I intended for him to be a good guy, if you're the sort of person who would take my word for it. He had no pretensions to the throne, instead his watchword was service to his domain. His character illo was based on Lucian Truscott, and not on an iguana.

Dave
