Errata - that difficult subject

Dear Folks -

Errata - difficult? Never!
file_22.gif

I have a soft spot for MT errata. (Long-time readers will remember my revised Robots transmission rules!)

FWIW, I know the following:
- the MT authors essentially were Joe Fugate and Gary L. Thomas, despite the cover saying "Marc Miller" (Marc had overall control of the Traveller line at the time, and was a "known" name, which is why he was credited with MT)
- their intent was to fuse together CT and Striker (i.e. go further than the brief "Integrating Traveller" pages from Striker Book 3) - basically, they started out just like you guys here, fans who just wanted to update the ruleset!!! (remember that everyone, before you start throwing stones!)
- the original LBB's were typed directly into a typesetting machine, and therefore the text was not available in an electronic format
- this meant that the MT rules all had to be laboriously re-typed into a word-processing package on a "modern" 1985 computer
- this is the PRIMARY reason for all typos, missing text - and the changed wordings! (try comparing the content of the old Supplements 8 & 11 with the new Imperial Encyclopedia and you'll know what I mean by this)
- in an email to me, Dave Nilsen said that one of the many drivers for TNE was that GDW had done such a bad job of proofreading MT (actually he said "we f**ked up - that's honest, isn't it?"), and they wanted to put out a more polished, thought-out system (BTW, my complaint was TNE's lack of backward compatability, but that's just me! ;) )

With that background out of the way (hey, maybe that can be worked into an intro for your new manuscript!), here's a few techo answers, at least:

20 1Kw 0.025 0.1 0.070 120,000
That should read:
TL Power
20 0.1 kW

This table originally came from Grand Survey's vehicle-mounted sensors.

On pg 88, we have the following:

NEUTRINO SENSORS

1 Gw +1
1 Mw +2
100 Kw +4
10 Kw +6
1 Kw +8
1 Kw +10

Any idea what Tech Level do we get the +10?
The last line should read:
0.1 kW +10

Now you know. ;)

This has always bugged me. There is only one, very small, problem with the article. It was wrong! They messed up! Hold the Phone! The ship doen't work!

For starters, there is an unlisted error in the Ref Manual, page 62, Basic Hull Design 1 Step 4 (you guessed it) UCP 75000: reads volume of 1010000, it should be 1012500. 75000 * 13.5 = 1012500. It's not off by a lot, but it is still wrong. I found this out by writing a lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet to do my ship designs.

What a way to start a example design, by finding the only error line (that I know of) in the whole step.

On to the next problem (was this ship named the Titanic?): As noted in the errata, on page 65 the number of Jump Drive units needed for a 75000 size ship with jump-4 is 3750 units, not 2750 as listed on the table. That effects volume of jump drive, jump fuel, purification plants, etc. etc. etc. This ship is sunk. Five and one half pages of useless, step-by-step example follows. The ship doesn't work! Period! Sorry Mr. Fugate, I wish it weren't so.

Now, the article viewed as a guide on how to build a ship, it's good. The example stinks.

Sorry folks.

Version 2.07 of the Errata is posted to my website!

Several changes, including the addition of an UPDATES section noting changes, a PROBLEMS section noting areas commonly accepted as needing errata that don't currently have it, and ADDENDA, being unofficial errata for those PROBLEMS.

Only put one thing in the ADDENDA, davidjw's Robots design changes. They fit exactly with the ONE piece of errata in that section, and they actually work the way the rules intended, so I dropped them in.

We should identify more true ERRATA, if any, as well as make a note of recognized serious PROBLEMS.

Enjoy and critique.

I haven't used it at all, because it is TOO unlike the MT system for consideration as "errata".

Thank you! <blushes from the praise>

Did you get the errata for the Neutrino Sensors (see above)?

There is no errata for the sensors yet. Noted as a problem to work on.

I believe I know the unofficial answer, but before I propose addenda, I want to do a bit more research looking at Grand Census and Grand Survey.

Er, I meant, I gave the official answer in my posting above. The original data was presented in Grand Survey, and the incorrect numbers are a typo when they transcribed them to MT...

Let me bring out another one that I always thought should have been an errata as it seemed a design shortcoming.

Assume I'm a free trader, lurking out in space. I'm probably on the fringes of patrolled space, not too heavily armed myself, and in some hazard. So you'd think one of the most prominent skills I'd want for my crew is Sensor Ops. Just how does a Free Trader acquire this skill with the tables as they are? (I seem to recall this wasn't possible...)

That always struck me as a serious flaw, at least for Free Traders which are the common Merchant Character in games I've seen.

Also, how do you properly resolve Marine Flight School graduates subsequent careers?

These might not be outright errors, but more on the category of omissions.

That's true (I'd neglected that). Still, I'd have been inclined to add Sensor Ops to the Space group....where it clearly lives. (???)

I was just in my Player's Manual. My problem was that nowhere in any table a Free Trader is eligible for in the Merchant Prince advanced chargen is there a place for the Free Trader to *get* the Space cascade skill. For all the alleged flexibility of Free Traders, they have a fairly specified (few options in cascades) set of skill charts and Space features nowhere. Nav - 1 works, barely, to get sensor ops, but that seems like almost an excuse. If they had a few Space(cascade) entries in their skill charts, it would have let them have access to Sensor Ops directly.

i also find it interesting that Navy characters can spend time in a Frozen Watch and not age, but no Marines do. Does the Navy never Frozen Watch a ship with Marines on it? Don't Marines often travel from A to B in Low Berths? And perhaps are some not warehoused with the Navy guys? Ah well, that's not rightly errata, just the puzzling world of design decisions.

And the Consolidated MT Errata PDF is an incredibly handy resource!

Hyphen, I totally misread your posting on the sensors; I thought you were proposing numbers based on Grand Census. It wasn't till I looked at my copy that I realized you were giving me the numbers, and then I re-read your post.

Sigh.

Another quick question:

Does anyone have the stats for a type X particle accelerator?

It doesn't exist in chart 6 - weapons 1 step 2 (pg 71), but it has a to hit value in Starship combat 4 step 7 (pg 100)

I just noticed something else.

The High Velocity Gun table and ammo table have to be expanded. It only goes to 30cm (12 inch).

This means that most of the dreadnaughts from WW I forward can not be modeled.

Hey, this is fun!

My copy from DriveThruRPG.com has the following errata scribbled on it by Marc Miller (I presume, the cover page has a hand written note "errata entered" on the title page along with his signature.)

The changes for it is as follows:

EXTENDED SYSTEM GENERATION 2 (pg 27)

Step 15 - Orbit Zones for Star Size Ib
Orbit 11 Size K5 - H not O
Orbit 11 Size M0 - H not O

Step 17 - Orbit Zones for Star Size III
Orbit B0 and B5 deleted

Step 18 Orbit Zones for Star Type (Size) IV
Orbit B0 and B5 deleted

Step 19 Orbit Zones for Star Size V
Orbit B0 and B5 deleted

Yet more corrections:

WEAPONS 4 STEP 14 FUSION GUN TURRETS:

The example is wrong:

reads "...a UCP fusion gun factor of 3."

Should read: "...a UCP fusion gun factor of 6."

Question:

Universal World Profile Tables 1 (pg. 22)

World Law Level - General Description Code 6:

Moderate law (all firearms except firearms prohibited)

What does that mean?

It's a simple typo. It should read:

Moderate law (all firearms except shotguns prohibited)

Here's another riddle for you: You're in a tank mounting a 120mm CPR gun. What skill fires it? I'll give you an answer: None in the MT skill lists. Look through and see if I'm fibbin....

My answer was to add a CPR guns cascade from off of FA Artillery (is that the one that has the other tank direct fire weapons in it - saying this from memory - will check at home?).

I began a mini-project to create these from a spreadsheet, incorporating the naval guns from the Wet Navy design sequences in Challenge. This was meant to enable me to finish off the Heavy Weapons section of my Weapons Tables.

However, the list of guns quickly became HUGE, and alas, I never finished it. :(
