TRAVELLER

Nope. Not it.

Change the channel.

There are those that believe that live here began out there, far, far into the future, with tribes of Aslan, and Vargr, and Vilani.

Some believe that there are even now brothers of man, in the Spinward Marches, far, far across the stars in the heavens...

Uh-uh. No way. Go again.

EPISODE I

A long time in the future, far, far away, a great adventure took place...

Still not there. Nope. Not yet.

The Traveller Project was our last, best hope for peace. It failed.

No, no, no.

Um, how about...

This is Free Trader Beowulf,
calling anyone . . .
Mayday, Mayday . . . we are under attack . . .
main drive is gone . . .
turret number one not responding
Mayday . . . losing cabin pressure fast
calling anyone . . . please help . . .
This is Free Trader Beowulf . . .
Mayday . . .

THAT'S IT! YEAH! THAT'S IT!

Y'know it just struck me.....

For a Mayday call, that is pretty useless!

I don't really need to know that nobody greased the number one turret, or that your main drive fell off because the Starport didn't use Imperial-Standard thread screws.

Okay I do need to know you're under attack and in immediate danger of loss of life.

What I really need is to know where you are.

If you keep screaming until all the air runs out I can probably use sensors to triangulate your position, but it would speed things up if you could tell me your position, probably how far our you are, a bearing from the mainworld or something else and importantly your current vector so I know where to aim to intercept your tumbling hulk for salvage, not where you were when you made the call.

Whoever Beowulf's watchkeeper was he or she should check out How to Call Mayday

Like I said, thats the first time I realized it sucked  as a Mayday call....

But as an opening to adventure; it rules :D

I'm surprised that no one has come back with the big one that I missed in the OP:

Space. The final frontier. These are the journeys of a Traveller. His mission, to explore strange, new worlds...to seek out new live and new civilizations....

Or:

It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Traveller Zone
