Marauder PN-CU42 Fang MCr127.4

Using a 300-ton, TL12 hull, the Fang Class Marauder mounts jump drive-C, maneuver drive-F, and power plant-F, giving a performance of jump-2 and 4G acceleration. Fuel tankage supports a 2 parsec jump, at 30t per parsec, and one month of operations. Attached to the bridge is a Computer Model/2 std. There is one officer's suite, two double staterooms, a gunners' barracks, and two emergency low berths. Installed weaponry include 2 T2 Missiles, and 1 T3 Beam Laser. Cargo capacity is 45 tons. The ship has an unstreamlined hull, with scoops, intakes, and bins for frontier refueling.

Carried craft includes 1 Fast Boat, grappled to the hull. The ship has 8 crew: captain/astrogator, pilot, sensop, medic, boat pilot, and three gunners. There are also bunks for two security personnel.

Actual volume: 297 tons
Crew comfort: -1

So Rob, who makes it, where does it range, who primarily operates it, and why would they use a Fang Class rather than a typical Vargr Corsair?

So Rob, who makes it, where does it range, who primarily operates it, and why would they use a Fang Class rather than a typical Vargr Corsair?

Obviously I can't speak for Rob or the system he designed it under. But I'll provide some thoughts around a CT version.

The most interesting aspect of the design is the 'spare' 3 ton and the space dedicated to the fast 30tn boat. This leads me to think along the lines of a low cost 'almost' viable ('almost' is relative) commercial vessel with the potential for rapid upgrading for offensive or defensive duties.

The spare 3tn is sufficient to upgrade the model 2 computer to a model 5, albeit at great expense. Such an upgrade under CT will give the Fang a substantial offensive and defensive bonus against all commercial craft and many patrol craft in the same weight range.

The fast ships boat, if primarily intended for boarding actions and inspections, does not need to be streamlined, especially as the Fang is streamlined. One effect of this is in simplifying the hanger, to be in essence a space highly usable for carrying commercial cargo in standard sized containers. If Rob's designed is considered, the grapples he stipulates may be used to harness a 30tn standard container delivered by a modular cutter. Another alternative is to design the unstreamlined fast boat to fit in the dimensions of a 30tn standard container.

Take these into account and you have a 300tn streamlined civilian design capable of J2, carrying 75 ton of cargo and one or two mid passengers (depending on gunners) or double that for military passengers.

This ship may be viable as a subsidized merchant, servicing systems that are at risk from marauders or where the local government wants the ability to upgrade local defenses quickly. Purchasing such ships for regular mail runs and providing secure government cargo delivery may make sense with the ability to upgrade the computer package later as the threat model changes.

The unstreamlined, 30tn armed fast boats can meantime be purchased separately and hosted at an orbiting facility (say a suitable sized retired commercial vessel) and provide effective local customs and revenue enforcement patrol craft.

In this way the local space navy during times of stability, contributes financially to its own upkeep. In times of instability, the local space navy can consolidate fast and Free Traders can be contracted to take over much of the commercial cargo transport.

Weapon fit out could be changed to (in CT) 6 Beam lasers, as the factor 4 strength will inflict critical hits on craft in the same weight range. And 3 sandcasters, which at factor 4 will impede some of the incoming fire. This also frees up one of the gunners, which allows three ship board troops, four if the onboard medic is supplied by the military as a trooper cross trained as a combat medic.

In boarding actions, the target vessel will be approached by the fast ships boat, piloted by the Navigator, while the Fang stands off at 90 degrees to the boats approach vector. The target vessels turrets will be instructed to point to the rear of the vessel, movement from this position will be taken to be offensive action. The boat will dock and the four man fire team will secure the vessel, breaching portals as required. If the crew are compliant the Navigator will take over the engagement (while a trooper secures the boat) and conduct necessary checks and other protocols. Should the fire team need to withdraw and are cut off from the boat, they will breach the hull and evac into space, tethered together and await pickup. The boat will, if possible, break contact with the vessel at the same time as the team evacs, upon which the Fang will engage to neutralize the threat. A variant of this in times of instablity might include placing shaped charges on turrets before entering, with their firing controlled by the Captain on the Fang.

Just my 2cr :)
