Favorite Character Book

Shonner

SOC-14 1K
Out of all the Mongoose character books (those with the green lettering on the cover), which one is your favorite? And is that character type the one you generally play the most?

Out of what I have, I like Scoundrel and Scouts the best. Someday I will have a copy of Agents...

Yep, Scoundrel and Dilettante stir my RP imagination the most.

I wanted to love Scout, but it just didn't click for me. High Guard is cool for its expanded spaceship rules.

Alas, since I'm always the GM, I don't have a favorite character profession.

Dilettante is a favourite of mine too :)

Quick question for you chaps...

If we were to do Books 10, 11, and 12, what should they be?

We could do something on Scientists/Citizens, and Book XX: Alien has been discussed too. But what would you like to see?

Oh, I'd buy a book on Scientists and scientific research in the Traveller universe in a heartbeat. Even if you never actually play a Scientist or have one as a player character, their role as catalysts for intrigue, conflict and disaster could make such a book a goldmine for referees looking for scenario ideas and material to flesh out NPCs.

Agreed - a book on "Scholars", that included scientists and doctors would be welcome. The additional non-chargen materials that all these books have could include everything from a more detailed personal damage system (and ways to repair/replace damaged body parts), diseases, poisons, etc.

It could also include sections on strange environmental phenomena and quite a lot of diagnostic equipment (ie, custom toolkits) for players to blow Cr on.

And extended Lab Ship stuff would also fit in well, even if it's just "exactly what instruments go in that ship's laboratory, anyhow?"

Both Scholars and Citizens. I gotta know what colony life is about. Or working for some megacorporation or as an engineer (Trade skills) and know about the sciences for a career and medical breakthroughs. That is if there isn't a book already that has this.

Would love a book focusing on scholars, scientists & medics complete with additional details on computers, medical treatments & forensics (what good is a police department without CSI: Regina to back them up).

Let's see, so many to choose from...

Merchants are definitely in there for me, as much for the expanded/amended trade rules and the corporation-style minigame as the career expansion. (Useful for both sides of the player/referee gap!)

Dilettante is in there as well. I've got some home-brew rules allowing almost anyone to use the portfolio rules, using a character's Admin or Broker skill to set up his or her own investment scheme.

High Guard is an absolute must for at least the ship-building expansions. The career expansions are well-done as well, but not as critical as the ship-building.

All of the other career books... well, I've found useful stuff in just about all of them. (Except for Robots - there wasn't much of use in there for me.) Scouts was relatively low-content for me, but there was material to use. Agent also didn't hold as much for me as some of the rest, particularly not because Rogue was also in the mix and covered a lot of the same territory. But they're almost all at least somewhat useful.

Oh, and we definitely need a Scholars/Citizens book, whether individual books or a single combined one along the lines of Rogue for Rogues and Drifters.

Dilettante is a favourite of mine too :)

Rogue - Smuggler, Pirate & Scavenger(Tomb Robber) probably see the most use, not so keen on Slaver. Now the move is over will probably start the Pirates of Drinax adventure in the autumn.

Spica have produced some interesting careers like Bounty hunter, Port Authority & Space Patrol.

I think I'd like to see High Guard Careers for Aslan & Vargr, plus Fighting Ships type books for them as well, plus Zhodani and Swordies.

Kind Regards

David

Psion. Although they could have done a little more research on the subject. I've got several other (non-Traveller) game books on the subject with a bunch of powers that could have been included, but weren't.

Scouts. Again about the research, tho.

We did try, though every university we contacted turned down our requests for the results of their psionic research.

That's a shame. Princeton had their work out on the web.

Actually I was talking about in Science Fiction, tho. A number of powers from Science Fiction that show up in other Sci-Fi rpgs weren't in Psion. Check out Fading Suns section on Occult/Psi or Alternity's Mindwalkers.

All except mercenary (which I was very much looking foreward to_Oh well.)

Mercenary was disappointing. The title was taken way too literally (IMO), and the book really didn't deliver the kinds of "expanded Book 1 careers" that the subsequent ones (and the respective CT antecedents) did.

Dilettante is a favourite of mine too :)

Barbarians (Include Stone age to pre stellar). Nobles (Similar to, but different from Dilettantes by far), and Scholar (A lot could be done there).

I'm not a fan of the stacked career structure of High Guard, but that may be due to not enough explanatory text. The rest are fine.

Book 10: Citizens of the Imperium - citizens and scholars. Bring in scientific research rules as in Megatraveller (or the old Ringworld rpg).

Book 11: Charted Space - expanded star system generation.

While we're at it: Alien Modules for Hivers and K'Kree

A more Third Imperium or 2300 focussed Campaign Guide.
