FFE 16: Second Survey

I would agree, IF it was to DGP standards, cleaned up, and ready to rock and roll. I mean xboat routes, hex rather than squares, and cleaned up UPPs.

DGP standards? You mean include a seperate volume of errata?

I agree.

However, for it to work, it needs several things...

first: Every world needs a name.

Second: each sector needs not one, but at least two maps. One traditional Traveller Map, and one T&C map (use the trade routes maps ala Anthony Jackson's works (See the marched map at http://www.grandsurvey.com/sec/ec.spinward_marches.pdf ), but including trade codes for us NON-GT types.

Third: each sector needs some library data, and the known minor races need to be placed into homeworlds and covered in the library data. (Esp the older ones like Virush, Newt, and Ael Yeal), and it should cover beyond the borders, as well.

fourth: maps need to have color.

if it meets those criteria, I'd go ahead and blow the $40 I'd expect it to run. Not once, but twice. Once for collection, once for play.

I agree - being relatviely new to Traveller, I never had the opportunity to see the CT references of AotI nor Survey 2. I did waste money on T4 Survey (still have the bad taste). Therefore, like other new Traveller players, I have a need for a general outline of the entire Imperium. The Map in MT is a good start to convey the scale - what it lacked was detail.

The key for success in this book would be an introductory chapter detailing the Imperium at a general level. This would explain the interconnectedness of the Imperium beyond the sub-sector level. Detailing one sector at a time implies that the boundary conditions (ie. the neighbors) have no effect on the systems along the boundaries of the Sector.

As such, I don't see an issue of defining what the canon universe is. As others have stated on this post, if someone wants to create their own sub-sectors by hand, they can do it anyway - but for those of us who barely have the time to play in a game, having a predefined universe is a big help. It also serves as a skeleton or framework upon which others could contribute in terms of specific world data, corporations, etc.

Just my 2 cents.

Random world generation is fine for individual referees producing their first Traveller setting, but it is no basis for creating the canon to underlay the entire Official Traveller Universe.

Is that the good Major?

Either way he is very correct here. Please take this opportunity to correct the mistakes of the past.
