"Mayday, mayday, this is 'Serenity'-class ship 'Firefly' . . . "

If you are a fan of the show, spread the word to your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, anyone else you can think of and ask them to start watching the show. It's not doing well in the ratings, and Fox is considering cancelling it. The current November sweeps period is crucial. If it doesn't do well this month, it won't last until January.

Crap, it was just starting to get GOOD.

Well, maybe next time they'll show the episodes with good writing FIRST

Source: FIREFLY SUPPORT
TIMES READ: 538

WE HAVE A DEADLINE. November Sweeps is from October 31 to November 27. This is a key time for ratings and will determine how the FOX network sees Firefly. So let's take this opportunity to show them how many people watch it. Our goal is to get 5000 postcards sent to Fox by November 7, within the first week of November Sweeps. As you send your postcards, please email postcards@jossisahottie.com to let us know. Thank you!

Send Fox a postcard.

Let them know how you feel. Emphasize what you like about the show. Is its wit what fascinates you? The fast-paced action? The exploration of the human experience? The historical inspiration? The more good points you list, the better.

Let them know who you are. Mention your demographics: age, sex, occupation, place of residence.

Send a postcard that represents yourself or where you live, or download ours (Microsoft Word Document) and print it on heavy paper.

Send the postcard to:

FOX BROADCASTING CO
ATTN: SANDY GRUSHOW, CHAIRMAN, FOX ENTERTAINMENT GROUP
10201 WEST PICO BLVD
LOS ANGELES CA 90035

You can also help by contacting your local Fox affiliate and letting them know how much you enjoy Firefly. Find your affiliate at Fox's website here.

E-mail Fox at askfox@foxinc.com.

But the real question TJ: Are you going to help with the writing campain?

Has anyone found e-petitions similar to the ones that were started to save Farscape?

Could you fake it? It might be in your benefit. ;)

It's not as if we're trying to break election laws?

Wait,

If they make a show that's crap, and we send post cards saying how much we like it, won't that just ensure the only sci-fi that gets on TV is crap?

Now, I know what you're all going to say - crap sci-fi is better than no sci-fi. I don't know that I agree. I'd much rather have one Red Dwarf that ten Andromedas.

Now that Firefly has changed its intro to cover the plot holes and actually has some decent plots and dialog, it would be a shame for it to go. It does raise the question, however, why didn't that have better plots, dialog and cover the plot holes BEFORE!?!

I think you are right inyour thinking....I think that T.V. people make or build a show just to please the "SPONSORS"...not the AUDIUNCE....
its all for the "BOTTOM" line.....They could make a good show for US...if they realy wanted to...and make a lot of money themselves....this failure just shows every one how CHEAP they are...and i say all this without even seeing the show.....

Not if you state what you liked, especially if you indicate particular episodes. As this is the first season fan input can help clean up the rough edges.

Well, let's see if we can identify those good things.

CHARACTERS

Kaylee is a FUN character. Not to mention serious eye candy (a lot better that the Courtesan, IMHO). But she will never be a "main" character.

Zoe and her husband will always be "Ensign Red Shirt Girl" and "Ensign Red Shirt Boy." Never anything more.

Jayne is ok, but he's no Warf.

Preacher, Doctor and Psyco-Sister are so superfluous they may as well be Lamp, Chair and Table. The show is better off without them (except maybe Doctor, and Psyco-Sister IS hot). And according to the previews, they may be rectifying the Doctor situation next week.

So that leaves Mal and Courtesan for the show to be "about." Well, I like Mal, on the weeks when the writing is up. Courtesan is ok, but how any times can we see "Please don't hate me because I sleep with men for money" stories before we all collectively say "Dump that ho, Mal, we all know you're better off with Kaylee."

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

I'd like to see more with Kaylee. Like I said, she's just fun. Occasionally the blurbs between Zoe and hubby are sweet. They should be kept to a minimum, though. A LOT of fun could be had with Jayne. Big, dumb and homophobic is a classic recipe for fun stories.

"Yes, I won a trophy in an apple pie baking contest. What of it?"

The best character development they could do with the Preacher is to let him die next week.

Doctor and Psyco-Sister, well, either develop it or DROP IT. We're tired of WAITING.

BACKSTORY

I'd like to see more of this, but could they tell more story with out opening up huge plot holes? I doubt it. I don't think THEY know what's going on/went on, so how could that tell us?

Take a page from history. If you want to help Firefly, send a personally written letter. A cookie cutter letter or postcard will get ignored but I understand that original, personal letters are taken much more seriously.

And before you go deconstructing the show, its a little hard to evaluate all the characters on the show after what, 5 episodes? Come on. . .

So true. Star Trek: the Next Generation sucked out loud the first season, and most of the second. I would have canned it after the pilot, frankly. Firefly may not be as developed as we might like, but it should have a chance to hit its stride.

For one thing, when was the last time we had a Sci-fi program where the protagonist characters are all civilians? For that, I'll even accept the creepy sister and the completely superfluous (as far as I can tell, she doesn't actually DO anything) Zoe. At least Shepard acts as a minor foil for Mal's anti-establishment rhetoric. All in my opinion, of course.

If you're inclined to write letters, or send postcards, send them to the show's sponsors. Anyone who runs an ad during the show. Tell them you will buy their products because they support the show. If it's a local business, call them up and tell the manager how much you appreciate them sponsoring the show. That will have a large impact as well.

As for the show's storyline, plots, characters, etc. The biggest problem is still the fact that they filmed a two-hour pilot that covered the backstory, and how the characters all got together on the ship, etc., and Fox wouldn't let them show it as the first episode because it didn't have enough action. So they've been showing episodes out of order from the first. They tried to alieviate part of that problem on a recent episode -- the one in which they were running out of O2 and eveyone left the ship except the captain. Mal started having flashbacks to how he met all of the crew members. Still didn't explain the preacher, the doc and the sister, but it was a start, and helpful. I don't know if this episode was always intended to be filmed that way, or if they threw in the flashbacks to help with some of the backstory problems, or what.

Supposedly, the two-hour episode is to be shown during the Nov. sweeps. Don't know if that is still Fox's plan or not.

I have to disagree with this. All sponsors care about is, "Are people watching the show so they see our ads?" They really don't care about the content, unless some group starts writing them letters saying "Since you support this show, and we don't like the content, we're boycotting your products." Sponsors want a show that draws viewers, especially viewers in the demographic to which they want to sell their products.

And the networks make, or try to make, shows for a large audience. That's where they run into problems. They want every show to be a Top 20 hit, and even then they aren't always satisfied (look at all the Top 10 rated shows over the years between "Friends" and "Seinfeld," or between "Friends" and "Will & Grace," or between the "Seinfeld/Will & Grace" time slot and "ER." They dropped so much of their lead-in audience, NBC canceled them or moved them to another night even though they were a Top 10 rated show). The networks -- at least the big 4 -- won't make a show for a niche audience, a small but loyal audience that will support a show consistently.

Cable was doing that, but after what the Sci-Fi Channel did with "Farscape," I'm not sure that cable is even satisfied with drawing a niche audience. All the cable networks want the next "Sopranos" or "The Shield," a cable show that will draw better ratings than the network shows opposite them.

I understand the networks and cable channels want to make money. They have to be profitable to stay in business. But the business has gotten so competitive the last decade or so, and especially the past 4-5 years, that the networks aren't willing to give a show a chance to find its audience, and develop its characters.

It's first year on the air, "Cheers" was the lowest-rated show on prime-time television. But NBC stuck with it, and it developed into one of the best shows ever, one of the most beloved shows ever, and perennial ratings champ and Emmy-award winning champ. If "Cheers" was released today, it would be cancelled after two weeks.

Well, if Firefly gets bumped from Fox, maybe it can get picked up by FX?

We can only hope.

Oh God, not WB, NOT UPN!!!

I really think TV will shake out like Pro Baseball, where you have the 4 major broadcast networks with the A-list shows, then each network will have one or two "Farm Team" cable stations (like Fox has FX and NBC has TNN) where either new shows are developed then brought up, or where old shows go to play out their last season or two.

I mean really, who among us WOULDN'T watch FX on Friday night rather than Fox on Friday night just to see more Firefly?
