Okay, you have a survey crew go ahead and mark valuable ores for mining. It would be better they send all of their time surveying and none of it mining. Leave that for the robots.

As for ore, I agree that only the rarer and more valuable ones should be targeted. Iron and nickel are far too common to have much value. In fact, silicon, aluminum, and the like are probably off the list too.
I'd figure they concentrate on the heavier metals and rare earths rather than "common" ores that can be found on most planets in sufficient quantity.
