[French Traveller] Sample art

Now, I'd agree Serenity is more Traveller-esque than Alien, but when I was playing Traveller was back in the 'glory days' when the game had just come out - and so my memories recall Alien, not the twenty-first century's Firefly.

If I were playing in a campaign lately, that'd likely change a bit, as I've become a real Firefly and Serenity fan.

I tend towards the B5 end of the spectrum myself, but I favour artificial habitats and massive space stations. Firefly / Alien art is the kind of stuff I try to dump my players into, and I still fondly recall the game I ran the week after most of my players had gone and watched the movie "event horizon" (and the scenario I ran was a straight-up rescue mission, but the PC's were a lot more "on edge" than usual that week ;) )

B5 also had the "wheels within wheels" plot lines, and lots of unintended consequences: I didn't follow Serenity, but Joss generally had the most "intellectual" series on at any given time, so I'd expect that to be the case with Serenity as well, but I haven't actually watched it.

Philippe's art (the first pic anyway) makes me think "foreign legion in space" which may be exactly what he is aiming for. The fellow with the "Solomani Tribal" look fits in nicely with Traveller's "Belle Epoch" or "Age of Empires" trappings.

I'll be interested to see the final product once it comes out! Will it be available "international" to (nominally bilingual) Canada?

Certainly, but I don't know exactly how.
I guess I'll contact the shops in Quebec, so they can sell the books to the wrong side of the Atlantic.

Speaking of art...after all this time, I just figured out what I don't like about the T20 art (across the top of this web page).

The drawings are cool. They're "Traveller". But, the coloring is like a comic book, which "isn't" Traveller.

I've always "kinda" liked the T20 art and "kinda" didn't. Now, I realize what was bugging me. It's not the drawings themselves, but the way they're colored.

Fifth Element works for me, flash and grit at the same time with style.

Consider the taget audience for this games also, Traveller stereotype of 1970s Californians in Spaaaaace won't work as well.

I've got no problem with more of a "Fifth Element" look for French Traveller. A Jean “Moebius” Giraud or Jean-Claude Mézières look would be... shall be say apropos. ;)

</font>[/QUOTE]I would also be happy to try to sell them in Ontario, remember there is a significant population of franophones outside la belle province. At local Cons & whatnot.

I think the art is good, very well crafted, but somehow they don't seem to capture the gritty realism (read pain!) of the Traveller universe. I have no problem with styles of dress or heavy gear feel of the equipment, as after all regional variations across the Imperium and beyond would encourage diversity. It's just the way the faces and bodies are drawn, too reminiscent of high fantasy when traveller is low fantasy... Traveller beings are ordinary members of their race put in situations that bring out the inner hero.

Some art has been finalized, a new sketch has been submitted (I will ask the guy to-redraw the Aslan, they look too brutish).

And, yes, the android is somewhat off-topic, but it's the only piece of art for which I said to the artist "Do what you want !". It's not entierly off-topic, though, it may be a vision of a future "Viral Hell".

The Aslan looks like the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Actually, that's kind of an improvement!

The soldats and heros look great, and I look forward to the souk in final form.

The cyborg...well, it's interesting on its own merits, and it certainly goes a long way toward explaining Imperial paranoia about such things...
