Greetings from a Classic referee

Hi All

After silently watching many of the Traveller forums for some time (years), I have finally go round to registering.

After 20+ years of refereeing Classic Traveller, and longer playing, I must admit I have looked on each of the "new" versions as a potential source of background materials, but have never felt the need to change the basic rules I use. Having bought MegaTraveller, New Era (all later sold) and some of T4, never felt the need for GURPS or T20. Some of the recently released multi-rule-set campaign and background books (especially the BITS ones) have definitely caught my attention.

The Starter Box Set with the two large format rules and tables booklets remained my favourites as a core reference for many years. After lots of use, my playing copy looked worn, and didn't come out as often as I would have liked, due to work, family commitments etc. A recent revival of interest (and making time for Traveller) has coincided with actually managing to buy a mint, shrinkwrapped new set! Now I have no excuse not to plan the start of a new campaign!

Another silent Traveller speaks up

Since one ref has announced his presence, its my turn to speak up...
Started with CT way back and have run various campaigns over the years, having to restart everytime the military moved me (retired Navy)... I've been a member of COTI since 2004 but always watched - no more. Now that I've settled (more or less), I will be starting another group and will be looking for ideas (and providing some of my own)... And from my time watching this site, there are lots of people with great ideas...

Great to see another person interested in CT. The game might be old, it might be skeletal, but with some work and a lot of imagination you could breath life into these bones and graft flesh unto them (see my sig for such flesh-grafts).

Whilst I have purchased the CD-Rom of all the original books, I still prefer to look things up on paper. Even whilst using Gal 2.4 to record the gaming universe, the data still ends up being transferred to paper when I print out maps with Campaign Cartographer 2. When remembering that I used a manual typewriter to type out some of the first subsector listings I created, I realise just how lucky we are that we can produce our own LBB equivalents using comparatively inexpensive hardware and software.

To me Traveller will always be about verbal description, with 15mm figures on the tabletop to resolve some scenarios. The temptation to use too much technology in face to face gaming moves the art of refereeing too close to moderating a computer game for my liking.
