Has XBOX killed P&P RPG's?

RPG's won't go away, because...

You can play RPG's by candlelight.

When I was growing up, those 3 LBBs, some pencils and paper and a few dice are all my cousin needed to keep us all entertained during summer months of camping without electricity.

I think the more flashy and overt the online and computer stuff gets, the more starved one's own imagination becomes.

the problem that xbox & such is that everything is linear. In P&P RPGs, the players can go in any direction they want.

This changes a bit with MMORGs but the limits are more that just a GMs imagination.

I have both a xbox 360 & a PS2 & they bore me to tears. Yeah, the eye-candy is great, but the story lines are too linear to keep my interest.

Some of the better games on various platforms have been only semi-linear.

For example, Legend of Zelda: Windwaker. Many of the quests are easiest when done in a specific sequence, but I did manage to do one of them out of order... and most of the side quests are.

Likewise, the old Fantasoft game, Realmz, was noted for non-linear adventures. Too bad it was for 68k Mac.

Yipe! III was likewise only semi-linear. Get past dungeon two, and you can get to all the game world. (Survive it is another matter...)

I've always found that the CRPG and FPS I've played have only added to MTU. I've mined all kinds of worlds, quests, equipment, and even NPCs from these games. I treasure a lot of them for the inspiration they provided.

But nothing beats face-to-face dice rolling!
