Music for Classic Trav Space Journeys

Ah, the joys and responsibilities of His Imperial Majesty's favor . . . :)

(Actually, Aramis, Hemdian, and several others have equal or greater awards than I do).

There was a Russian officer (50 years+ service) who, in his 70's donned his court uniform, and had medals on both sides on the front, and half the back.

For some real flash-back 1950's sfi-fi musical goodness, search for "Army Men Toys in Space" theme or soundtrack. It's very similar to 77topaz's offering :)

Yep, that soundtrack has got the dramatic strings, the triumphant brass (which I don't think appears in the Otto Matic level themes, but does in the "win" and "high score" themes), and, probably most importantly, theremins! Heck, even the cover art looks similar to that of Otto Matic. :)

Neil Norman has a nice 5 disc collection of Science Fiction themes on iTunes, of which I have some on one of my computers from the actual CD set. There is also some other science fiction theme collections on iTunes that are worth checking out.

I still love Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band by Meco for its quirkiness.

And I still like some of the themes for the Saturday morning shows from when I was a kid, like Stingray, Supercar, and Thunderbirds.

I am also noted for playing military music at times.

Lots of good ideas. I do want to avoid well know things like Star Trek or Star Wars themes. I think it would be not just distracting in general and lead to convos out of game about the shows/movies, but won't fit too well in a setting that is supposed to be thousands of years from now. Not the type of music, but just the well known aspect of it.

Though I think less known classical is great, various artists like Jean Michael Jarre, Tangerine Dream, etc work well with this and other genres (D&D, etc).

For racy, hipster parties and bars and such I found that Asian synthapop gives a nice "out there" vibe to things. Both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time!

Wow I hadn't realized Tangerine Dream was a band that started back in the late sixties. Listening to Alpha Centauri sorta Pink Floyd like.

Yeah, some of Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett-era songs, especially instrumentals like "Interstellar Overdrive", do resemble the so-called "Krautrock" of Alpha Centauri-era Tangerine Dream.

Chase, the most distinctive bit of the soundtrack to 1978's Midnight Express ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViN2bRGrBx8 )

The classical bits of the original Cosmos soundtrack ("The Music of Cosmos"). Specifically The Sea Named 'Solaris' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PugpOERU1cw ) and Shostakovich's Symphony No.11.

The Nirvash TypeZERO theme from the anime Eureka 7 ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTAkxiPkxGQ )

The score to Disney's "The Black Hole" is pretty cool space adventure music, though more in line with 77topaz's 1950s riffs :)
Just the main theme is fine ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI6VPFQw6BU ). Music during RPG sessions should evoke a mood or scene.

Thanks for the tip about Jean Michael Jarre, hadn't really listened to his music before, enjoying a couple albums on my android phone using my Bluetooth Motorola headphones.

Two classical items that I like a lot that IMO are good for Traveller-

Smetana's Moldau

Holst's The Planets

The anime series Legend of the Galactic Heroes effectively uses classic symphonies for it's battles. There are soundtracks based on the scores they use. Right in that High Guard wheelhouse.

We cannot forget Vangelis. Sorry if it was already posted, didn't see his name.

Ahem:

I'm probably the only-living person who remembers and still loves Vangelis. Any number of his albums are excellent background tonalities for SciFi gaming. If you want really strange, really experimental, go with his Beaubourg, which is now finally on CD. One of the spacier albums was Albedo .39 (I believe that a few tunes on that album were featured in the Carl Sagan programme Cosmos, BitD).

;)
