We seem to have a spammer selling phones on the survey forum. How did that get past the gatekeepers?

Who vetted a member called 'mobilesfornew'?

We're not that short of genuine posts, are we?

We never have vetted new members. Once their email checks out, they can post, and that's all automated.

But if one of the first 10 posts is spam, permaban. And mobilesfornew got one.

I was just curious. I've never seen any spam here before. Presumably you delete the threads too, and I just happen to have caught this one before you had chance?

Feel free to delete this thread too. It's served its purpose.

One of the other mods dealt with it before *I* could see it.

Yes, spam threads get deleted. Spam posts in other threads get deleted.

Spammers get banned. Usually within a couple hours.

Hey, wait a minute. Now that's just plain mean. My message my be innane from time to time, but they are not SPAM.

... Oh, wait. I didn't PM you. Whew! It wasn't me then.


(Actually, NO. I have never recieved PM spam here. My Yahoo mailbox is another matter - if I ever need a replica watch or cheap drugs, I know where to go. [or at least where to dispose of surplus cash if I ever find that I have too much].)

Yeah, the fact that this was the first spam I've seen in 3 years says a lot for the response time of the Mods.

PS. I just re-read my initial post and it sounds really sarky and accusatory. It wasn't meant to be. I wrote it as good-natured banter, but maybe it didn't come out well. I seem to have developed a negative DM on my Carousing-0 just lately. Apologies if it upset anyone.

A military board I frequent had a similar problem recently... a hackbot got into the PM system and used members PM accounts to send spam PMs to other members, without the knowledge or permission of the board members whose user IDs were being used.


Basically, virtual ID theft.

in this recent case, no such tech.

The account used was brand new, had made no posts, but several PM's... and was 1 digit from a prior banned account.

Personally, I wish spamming were punishable by law with a month at forced labor...
