How big is 1vls?

It came from the HG (book 5) Starship design system, which uses "Tons" as both weight and volume. (More volume than weight, but still it covers both).

Nope ,
1vl = 10 litres and 1000litres = 1 cubic metre
Ok then if 1 vl = 10 liters and 100 vl is the volume of a human and 100 kg is the weight of a human this means that the human weighs 0.1 kg per liter. I know from the m.k.s system that 1 liter of water weighs 1 kg, so it seems to me that the average human would float in water very easily. In fact only 1/10th of his body would be submerged if he sat in water. He would need a weight in order to sink to the bottom as he would have trouble sinking.

That's one of the problems with the "human = 100vl" given in the book. It gives the volume of an average human to be 1000litres, which is, as you calculate, wrong.
Now 100vl (1000litres or 1 cubic metre) may be the total space occupied by a human seated at a work station (and should include the seat, controls and enough room to move around freely to do your job) and so can be used in vehicle construction, but for form fitting Battle Dress and human scale robots, a volume of 10vl (100litres or 0.1cubic metres) is a more accurate value, IMHO.
YMMV ;)

Glad I am not the only person confused by all this. And all I really was trying to figure out is how much Tonnage my Air/Raft takes up in an upgraded Scoutship.
