• Welcome to the new COTI server. We've moved the Citizens to a new server. Please let us know in the COTI Website issue forum if you find any problems.
  • We, the systems administration staff, apologize for this unexpected outage of the boards. We have resolved the root cause of the problem and there should be no further disruptions.

How do you read these forums?

How do y'all prefer to read the Citizens of the Imperium forums?

I used to go to the list under CotI Features > Discussion Forums, and browse around for topics that looked interesting.

Then I discovered the list under QuikLinks > Today's Posts, and found that much more efficient, as it shows new posts in all of the forums, ordered by most recent posting. No more need to click through the individual forums unless I am looking for something older, and then I usually just use Search.

Anyone have another method to recommend?

Since I am not interested at all in about half (or more) of the individual fora on CotI, that method would annoy me immensely.

I use the method that shows the list of fora, and I open those areas that I am interested in which show new posts. I then open the individual threads I am interested in.

I use the new posts link.

I skim or read every post on the board. At times it sucks...

I pop in every hour or so when I'm working online and scroll down to the Latest Post section at the bottom and see whats new. Good thread titles, in three words or less, are essential if you want me to click. I'll also go to Subscribed threads under the User control panel to check if anyone has commented on a thread I've commented on.

Initially I was only interested in the T5 board and had it bookmarked specifically, now I've added the CT and MongTrav boards.

I use the COTI Features -> Discussion Forums link for my bookmark, as well. I scroll down looking for certain forums that have new posts. It can be overwhelming if there are lots of new posts. But, I use the tabbed browsing feature of my browser and open every single forum I'm interested in with a different tab, then work my way through them. (I then open multiple subsequent tabs from the forum page if there are multiple threads I want to read. It can get a little cramped up in those tabs. :) )

The only inefficiency to that (for me) is when I discover that a forum didn't have any threads I was interested in, despite having new posts. But, that's really minor.

A suggestion, Spacebadger: Why don't you put this together as a poll, in that forum? You don't need to, but it seems the perfect sort of question for that. :)

I also use to go to Dicussion Forums, look at the Latest Posts for new posts and to the forums where there are posts latter than the last time I logged in if I see no already seen posts in Latest Posts.

From those, I choose those I may be interested in and read them (and sometimes, as moderator, some threads whose topic I don't care about just to see how people behave).

That's a good idea once more ways are explained, as otherwise you risk too many votes in the other option just because there was a way you didn't know.

I use an RSS reader. Was using Google reader untill it went "bye, bye", now I use either NewsBlur or The Old Reader. I subscribe to many different forums and news outlets and by using one of those applications/webpages for RSS feeds I can one-stop-shop all my feeds.

This.

I agree that Thread titles should be informative.

I also use the 'tool tip' by hovering over a new thread to read the first few lines of the first post to see if it sounds interesting. Therefore, I would encourage folks to put a useful description at the beginning of their post.

That is what I do, along with 'subscribed threads' under 'User CP'.

My COTI link takes me to the list of all forums.
I simply choose to look in the folders/tabs which I am interested in (T5, TNE, Lone Star, MT) and then search out the topics I am interested in reading about or perhaps responding to.
