Dear Naval Architects,

I've recently merged two hull material tables, and I'm thinking this table is a mess. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rob

I'll take these one by one.

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">S6c 6 Titanium 3 8 1250 0.0100
S6c 6 Titanium 2 4.5 1250 0.0056</pre>
I'm tempted to take the first entry, unless there's a reason not to.

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">SG 16 Hullmetal 12 5 1500 0.0075
SG 16 Hullmetal 6 6 1500 0.0090</pre>
Here, I have no clue. It has to be significantly stronger than TL15 material, but beyond that you got me. Maybe the second one is TL17?

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">SH 18 Foamed_Hullmetal 6 2.5 750 0.0019
SJ 18 Foamed_Hullmetal 6 3 1200 0.0036</pre>
I'll likely take the second one, since it again uses a whole number.

Ah, I bet the second one is actually TL17. A typo, how wonderful. Is this stuff from MT?

According to a 1998 post from Harold D Hale:

</font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">
TL Class Type Toughness Mass Price (MCr) (Mw/kL)
6 A Titanium Alloy 3.0 5.0 0.012
7 A Laminate 2.0 6.0 0.003
8 A Composite Laminate 6.0 8.0 0.008
5 D Exper. Plastics 0.2 1.0 0.0001
8 D Hybrid Plastics 0.5 1.5 0.0003
11 C Doped Plastics 1.0 1.0 0.0004 </pre>
Can't find equivalents for the others.

Materials are identified by a code: A - can be used for all construction
applications; B - cannot be used for starship hulls; C - cannot be used for
either starships or vehicles that can achieve orbit; D - same as class C,
except add vehicle armor

You left out
concrete, fiber reinforced

Chitin (grown hulls)

I suspect that accounts for the different values between similar material.

And now for the KCr64 question: why did FFS2 change toughness?

FF&S1 was rounded closer to whole numbers, and based upon an older data-set.
