Is there a "World Cup" tournament in Traveler?

What sports are there in the Traveller universe?

What would a World Cup or Superbowl look like in the Imperium? Other empires?

Create a sport or team

Well IMTU I do have a Rollerball league. The arenas are obviously more hightech than either the original film or the remake have. Afterall with artificial gravity much more is possible. It is also true that if paid enough humans, and Aslan, Vargr etc would take part.

An Aslan rollerball team would be interesting!

There's boloball which has (intentionally) never beendescribed in any real detail other than to say it is a nasty professional sport.

One of these days I intend to write up the rules for zero-g curling.

Otherwise you will get the normal run of kicked ball sports (soccer) carried ball sports (american football, rugby) batted ball sports (baseball, cricket) racket sports (tennis, badmiton) vehicle sports (racing of all kinds) and of course the martial sports (boxing, wrestling, judo)

These sports may or may not be recognizable to a twentieth century terran but will follow the basic pattern.

According to the Traveller's Digest on 57th century Terra the Imperial Marines play the earthlings at soccer every year!

What about micro-gravity Baseball?

I should think MR. RAWLINGS would have to complete an orbit, before it's caught, for a "ground rule double". The ball would have to acheive escape velocity for the astroid it's played on, for a home run.......

Wow! These are really great!

Back "in the day" our group said there was always a "Zero-G" Bowling alley on every orbital facility. The fact that we had no notion of how the game might be played was academic

Well, IMTU I have "Glisten Rules" bare knuckles boxing as popular among the the lower classes. I also allow dueling among Nobles and various service officer's corps.

There's also the other races to consider. With the Vargr's drive for charisma, I'm sure several gravitate to becoming sports celebrities. Aslan males might go for the martial sports that mimic thier dueling. Of course also the Droyne have a whole cast section devoted to Sport (and the pictures of them show a sport droyne holding a sort of cup and ball so I expect they play a mean game of Jai Ali ).

...Now, if we could only convince the Virushi to play football :D

I understand one needed a mighty big cannon and it tended to be a little hard on the starships.

OTOH I recall there being a variety of starship races in canon. ;)

LOL

....true. And they can do neat stuff in low grav, what with the wings. And the invisibility. Not to mention telekinesis. Which is why the Droyne team has always won every sporting gold medal in the Imperium except for the blindfold underwater wrestling event.

Isn't this how a starship race would go:
"How many Gs does your ship have?"
"Six."
"Well, my ship only has five, so you win." [ ;) ]

Hmmm. I'm not sure I like the thought of the likely mystery ingredient for that one. :D

The Decadel Games

At the start of my new Traveller CT campaign, the backdrop consisted of The Decadel Games. Think a combination of World Series, Stanley, Kentucky Derby with a bit of The Olympics thrown in and you have The Decadel Games. It is the Final Four of basically Space Rubgy. located in the asteroid belt in the 4th orbital of the Jewell system in the Spinward Marches. Held every ten years, it is likely THE sporting event of the Spinward Marches, with VIP spectators coming from around the sector (and beyond) to view it in person from the veiwing stand where they sit in a heavy monitor-rich easychair console, picking several of the many POV camshots available. Available camshots are from each player's helmet, various staged points, with Zoom and enhanced visions. It is a week of festivities leading up to the Championship Game on Holiday.
