LEGO Project: Imperial Marines

So I ordered eighteen LEGO "Classic Space" mini figures, with a lot of wear on the front emblem, on purpose: I hope to get a good image of the Imperial sunburst, print it onto sticker-paper, and make Imperial marines out of the lot.

Any suggestions for image sources? And how about Zhodani commandos too?

Yeah, shouldn't Photoshopping the avatars do the trick?

And you'll need a real fine pen to make the Zho's helmets.

Avatars: yeah, that'll work. This weekend I screen-captured the images from MegaTraveller and re-sized them down to 60x60 pixels, at 120 pixels per cm. Just about right.

Turns out a bazillion of these little images print on one sheet of sticker-paper. A small circular stamp cuts them out nicely with a little bit of wiggle space.

Now I'm concerned about colors. I have them black on white, but I also have Dulinor's in red, Norris' in blue, Zhos in a kind of midnight blue, and the Sunburst in yellow. As far as I can tell, the Vilani have always been black. Margaret's is in black as well, but surely there's a color used there.

And then, I'll work on background colors. I have white, and I'm aiming to also have red, blue, yellow, and black.

Neat! Now we need to have LEGO versions of the Traveller ships (Type S, a Beowulf, etc)!

:) I actually started on that a couple years back playing with the online LEGO digital designer trying to build some small craft and vehicles to lego dude scale (even a Type S would be too big imo). I wasn't happy with the results though. Maybe someone else with a better imagination...

Whoo! Yeah, I imagine that would be pretty big!

Is Lego-Dude size the same as the minifigures (Like those included in the LEGO Millenium Falcon)?

Pretty sure. So, yes, a LEGO Suleiman would be large.

Think of it this way: build a stateroom for a minifigure; that's probably 2 to 4 tons.

Or: if only two 'studs' equalled one meter, then a Scout would be maybe 75 'studs' long, and 48 'studs' at its widest.

A more sensible, intermediate goal would be to make a "scale" version, where a single 1x1 brick displaces half a ton. That would reduce the stateroom to a 2x2 brick. The Sulie would be a more manageable 25 studs long, and 16 studs at the widest point.

The Sulie would be easy enough. Just use the Star Destroyer model, and remove the bridge tower. That would be about right.

Just in case you want to see the details on the scale version of the Falcon: http://starwars.lego.com/en-us/Products/Exclusive/Default.aspx

This is it - the biggest, most spectacular LEGO® Star Wars model ever! Straight out of the classic Star Wars movies comes the Ultimate Collector's Millennium Falcon™, Han Solo's famous smuggling starship. Every detail of the modified Corellian Engineering Corporation YT-1300 freighter is here, all constructed to scale with LEGO minifigures. At almost 3 feet (90cm) long, it's the ultimate centerpiece to any Star Wars collection!

• With over 5,000 pieces, this is the biggest LEGO set ever made!
• Model is built completely to minifigure scale - minifigures can sit inside and man the controls!
• Landing gear provides a stable base for model to stand on!
• Ship is over 33" long, 22" wide and 8" tall! (84cm long x 56cm wide x 21cm tall)
• Radar dish rotates and elevates and boarding ramp extends!
• Top and bottom quad-laser turrets rotate for realistic play!
• Cockpit top can be removed to access minifigures!
• Includes 5 minifigures: Han Solo, Chewbacca, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa!
Now if only I had $500 to spend on a Lego product...

That's what I was thinking, but I couldn't find a LEGO Star Destroyer...

Yes! And that would be able to handle the rest of the adventure class sizes as well (not to mention allow for a good deal of custom ships!). Wow, I never thought LEGOs would be cool again, but there you go. My kids are still in the Duplos phase... :)

Lego has 2 Star Destroyers, one not to real scale w/some mini-figs, the other to scale, really large, and (of course) really expensive. The larger one is only available on-line (or perhaps e-bay) from Lego. Check out their product exclusives for that one.

To make a scale PC-scale Lego ship would be a pretty big undertaking. But pretty cool.

There are several 'adult fans of Lego' communities out there who create some of the most amazing things from Lego. Someone did several Escher buildings (had to be photgraphed from the proper angle (see http://www.andrewlipson.com/escher/relativity.html ))

An evil thought, a Lego AHL would be doable. You just have to stack the decks on top of each other. You may need high ceilings though.

This sounds like the perfect excuse for having children!

Or you could just build children out of Lego's... :)

I could swear that I once stumbled upon a Lego version scout ship on the internet. My Google-foo is not turning it up though...
