Leif Ericson Scoutship

Oz, your have some good points. I was aiming for a 500 pulse laser in the design. But yours seems to double EP. Seems that all other spinal mounts reduce it compared to tonnage (in T20).

I figured there had to be reasons why laser bay weapons weren't very popular in higher-tech designs, so I built in some disadvantages to them. I intended the laser bays to be alternatives/additions to low-tech (TL7-9) designs.

It's all IMTU, anyway. YMMV.

Don't take this the wrong way. I really like the fact you put the effort into this crucial element for YTU. I have numerous home rules so I can appreciate the effort.

I was more in favor of the efficiency approach. Lasers are not as efficient in scale as mesons, PAs, etc. However, they provide better range. My concept was less power and damage per tonnage, but good range. Not using lasers after TL13 would be an efficiency preference of the Imperium.

Anyone else have thoughts/experience on this?

I've also heard nice things about Google Sketchup

I haven't used it, but my impression is that while you cannot make images that are as nice as Blender or Truespace, Sketchup is vastly easier to learn.

Yep, I fell in love with Sketchup because it was free and had the lowest learning curve I've yet seen for what it can do. I'm not that good but happy with what I can do for my limited investment in time, and I've seen some very nice stuff done with it (possibly with the full package rather than the limited* free one).

more wows.... I feel the need to catch up. Would make a nice small craft flight simulator too.

Sketchup

Wow far-trader, if that was done in Sketchup I need to take a crash course as my hand drawn deck plans and such look like cave paintings to that very impressive rendering.

The above Quoted For Truth. If I only had time.

Thanks also for the link to the size comparison also. It would be cool to have that added to the Starship Size Comparison site. Might be some good Free Advertising for Andrew and Traveller in general...

Andrew's talent as an illustrator as well as the skills of notable others here at the forum are more than advertisement enough for their resumes in the TU and any other!

Hey ! delighted to find this thread. The Leif has been a love of mine since....oh heck -pre traveller ? I have/had the UFO kit, ordered it from some kind of fanboy/comic tabloid. Coolness to see its got its fans, still.

Winchel's site inspired me to stat it out for HG some time ago -years, really, long before MGT. So, with all due humility, here is the Stat card I developed, based on a 5000 dton interpretation (derived from the 1/500 scale dimensions). Its a bit low on storage for consumables, but I assume that some of that is included in the stateroom allotment -U-Boat style -gives a tighter fit, but more supplies. It's neither fast (M2) or agile (0) but it does have a good range (J4).

COMMENTS

The Laser emitter from the AMT model is interpreted as a 100Dt Particle Bay; the other main weapon is a missle bay which doubles a as a brobe launcher. The turret arrangements are oriented towards point-defence rather than combat.

The marine detachment provides the Gig, ATV and A/raft pilots, as well as fusion gun turret control.

The scouts, cutters, fighters and gig are all stored in the 488 ton flight bay - thus no tonnage is allocated for them -the 488 dT is taken off the top; crew includes science and flightdeck crew, plus some extras for support . A "marine" detachment - say two heavy squads + a Lt. ) for redshirty goodness.
The SX type scout is a 150 ton rifter (double jump-2) variant; the SC is a standard model. Crews of these two mostly berths aboard.

The fighters are a semi-standard TL14 10dton model - they double as sensor/exploration platforms or interceptors depending on loadout.

The two cutters have one passenger module, and one exploration module.

Four extra modules are carried , (fuel, ATV, Passenger, base).

There is room to upgrade the ships boat to a launch or pinnace ; a third cutter can be added, but space becomes extremely tight on the flight deck.

It has a monster oversized computer ( for Science !) and a full backup suite of computer, bridge, and factor 1 drives and Power.

Costs do not include small craft , vehicles or subships. I got lazy, it would seem.

Sketchup is very nice, and availble free for mac X 10.3+ and win XP+.

It's also quite easy.

interesting approach

CaptainJack,

Glad you published some interesting ideas. Winchell has some good things on projectrho about it. The trek versions and the book versions. I was thinking TL 15 was too high for the book versions.
The phaser or laser was a big thing. Standard crew 87. Oz had a great idea but I cannot fit his 500dt laser bay into a 5k cruiser and meet any other criteria. So I've been looking at different specs.

******

Anyone know the highest tech for the Rule of Man? Anyhow, I thought she'd be new Armour tech like 12. Superdense comes around which explains the forward shield on some versions.

******
Andrew, Winchell, and Far Trader (everyone else doing designs), which env is better for doing modelling (mac or wintel)? Or doesn't it matter. I bought campaign cartographer for star grids and deck plans not long ago but what a WOW factor 3d modelling brings to the table.:D

computers...argghhh

The ROM were about TL12-13.

The best platform is the one you have! Many programs are available on both.

Was about to do a computer update... thought I'd ask. Presently, my laptop is a tabletop at best. But that is for a different thread.

Thanks for this thread! Not only do I love Traveller, but I love the LE too. To see them in the same context, along with Mr Boulton's renderings and comments by Mr Chung... you folks have just made my day!

Cool :)

And welcome aboard spinwardpirate :D (officially now that you've posted ;) )

Thanks!
I have posted here once or twice in the past, but what happened to those posts... I have no idea.

Btw, I love deckplans too! As you might suspect, from the pirate part of my handle.
;)
