Mapping question

I can find hex paper printers online. Is there some way to paste symbols in a specific hex to make up Traveller maps? I looked at some of the markers from the games on the Trav CD, but couldn't find any that look like what I wanted -things to make the symbol set on the Trav map, like the res and yellow circles for travel zones, gas giant and base symbols, etc.

Andy, try Googling for a map making program called Hexographer. I believe it's under ongoing development. It's fantasy biased, but the developer is open to scifi suggestions for symbols and was planning to make symbols customisable. I dunno how far down that route it's got, but it might be worth checking out - it's gotta be a year since I last looked at it.
Obviously, if the symbols you want are Traveller copyright, he won't be able to provide them, but if the custom option is there now, you could make your own.

Other than that, if you can import the hex paper into a graphics program and then draw your symbols in PNG format with a transparent background, you can paste and move them where you want. I might be able to talk you through the process if you have graphics software I'm familiar with.

any vector graphics program eg corel or adobe can handle your mapping requiement easily .... especially since you're only tring to do something spain coloured like a travelller sector map

In coreldraw for example you would 1) put a black or faintly speckled background box 2) put down your (sub) sector hex grid 3) put down the world / gas giant / amber zone symbols etc ... there is a align function in most programs to get the world and amber zones in the centre of the hex 4) draw likes for the xboat routes 5) draw empire borders etc

personally I would do each type of item on a different "layer" so you can shift the xboat lines in bulk to be behind the world icons etc which is why I made them tasks 1-5 but you could also manually move individual items to be "in front" of other items instead

after youve done the first one and learned the basics of the program a subsector should only take about an hour

Thanks Guys,
I am not to up on graphics software. Guess it's time to learn, but it just got moved to the back burner. Gotta do something to help out with a church project first and it's going to take some time.
