Medical Vessels

Ben W Bell

SOC-14 1K
I've looked through my extensive Traveller library and can find little reference to Imperial Navy medical vessels. What I'm interested in is there a canon design for them? By this I mean are they all white with red crosses on them to designate an unarmed ship? Are they yellow with blue stripes or the like?

Any ideas?

You know, that's a good question. I'd like to see a Medical ship! Gotta exist somewhere. I've read some great medical based sci-fi novels. The Sector General series (T. H. White???) are great! There is also a new series called StarDoc.

Well I am doing some things on medical ships and the like for a hopefully future Travellers Aide submission (I mentioned it to MJD in the past) and was curious if it had already been laid down before I made it up. If no one can supply any sources I shall feel free to develop the area.

Not that I am aware of. As far as a TA on the subject, I am all for that!

I would say that, similar to the red cross symbol today, medical ships would have a special transponder signal, so once battle was joined if they were targeted they could turn it on. I see most major polities recognising medical ships as non-targets in wartime, except the K'kree.

I also see definate agreed rules on the maximum level of armament for medical vessels. They maybe need a few beam lasers to defend against missiles and asteroids, but not many.

I've always been interested in the other ships in the navy other than the warships and I think medical ships have a definite place in the Imperial Navy.

I had a design utilized for such a thing for my TNE campaign, a Solomani ship. (Actually due to wartime losses, a converted Bulk freighter of liquid goods-coming in at 3ktns, with her 50dtn integral "tanks" being turned into bays. We have an illustration (not on the best paper I admit) on our URSULA site.
Unlike the Ursula TL-D freightractor, the Merci-class' pods came as part of the ship.
She had ten turrets, five of which were sandcasters.

The TNE PC's in me campaign found her as a vampire derelict...with a cyborg abaord, the chief medical virus, and of course, the main frame of ths ship itself.

but thats another story, another time...

A hospital ship is definitely missing among the auxiliaries. It's on my "to do" list.

That's interesting, because I feel similarly. My areas of interest have always been more along the support line than the big warships.

Anyone doing anything along the support lines (tankers, tenders, repair ships, etc.)?

</font>[/QUOTE]I'm creating an entire sector, including new government and military from scratch. Give me a couple of months and I'll have something cohert.

There's this homebrewed medical ship somewhere - Greg Svenson's page - that's well designed. I don't know where he got the idea, though.

I'm putting the basics together at the moment for a TA on support vessels for the Imperial Navy. Lots of ideas, now to write it. Need to finish the current one first though, almost there.

I've got some designs for a few things that I've been trying out to get a handle on the T20 design system:

</font>
  • 5000 dt Fuel Tanker. Robot tanker used to shuttle between Gas Giant purifying plants and fuel delivery points.1G non-starship.</font>
  • 100 dt Fuel Purifying station. Sits in GG atmosphere, fills tankers with refined fuel.</font>
  • 30 dt "Belter Bin". Used by belters within an Asteroid belt for prospecting purposes. 1G smallcraft.</font>
I think I've worked them out Ok, can post details if anyone interested.

cheers,

Mark

There is a medical scout posted on the TNE mailing list, it is a conversion from a ship in the Fasa Adventure Class Ships. It was a 400tn ship designed to spread medical knowledge amongst imperial planets. It also acted as an ambulance in the event of imperial intervention in a planetary disaster.

There are several search and rescue vessels with medical facilities in GURPS Starports.

I think there are some medical vessels in the BITs 101 starships.

Cheers
Richard

Liam.

I understand the meaning of Slainte but I don't speak gaelic. Never have, never will.

I shall endeavour to continue writing.
