MGT hits 10K

Border Reiver

SOC-14 1K
Love it or loathe it Mongoose Traveller's Corebook has just hit 10K sales according to Mythholder's livejournal. He is understandably pleased.

I don't know if this is purely dead tree or combined pdf and hardcopy but 10K is a significant figure. I think congratulations are in order to Mongoose, Gareth and everyone involved.

I was talking with Science Fiction author recently who felt that the Traveller fanbase would be the perfect target market for his new series of books but had no idea what sort of size or state it was in. I guestimated that MGT had made around 8000 sales and he felt that if he could even tap half of that he would be in clover.

The "Type S" adventure for MGT was the "hottest item" on Drivethru RPG
a couple of hours ago - another reason for a congratulation. :)

The interesting thing will be whether they can maintain sales of the corebook, through supplements and alternative settings.

and alternative settings.

I am particularly looking forward to seeing where this leads. MGT basic mechanics are close enough to CT mechanics that items and adventures seem eaily portable between the two. Frankly, after 30 years of Traveller Stuff, MGT is unlikely to create 'something completely different' in the venerable Imperium.

However, alternative settings are a clean sheet of paper with MGT (and therefore CT and T5) compatable assumptions. This seems the window of opportunity for some creative ideas to rise to the top and, perhaps, work their way back into other Traveller games and IMTUs.

Congratulations on the sales ... I'm watching and hoping for more goodness.

Well if what they're doing with Conan is anything to go by, with the new campaign adventures, then there might be some cool adventures coming up.

I know that format has been done before in MT or TNE, but be nice to see that kind of stuff in the Golden Age, where characters are less passengers among the larger events.

That is excellent news, and I hope they have plans to expand into international markets, like Asia or Eastern Europe. I am glad to see new interest and new sales for the game. It makes one feel less like some kind of RPG Shaker. I look forward to many more products to come.

Keep 'em Flying!

At the Con, there certainly was name recognition for Mongoose Traveller but they need to create some sort of splashy product that would tell people...no this is not the game that you die in Chargen but this is the game that takes on the almighty ...x. So a friggin nice cover and something to cause the imagination to soar. Although, that said, the con was dominated by D&D types (amongst the gamer contingent) where even Cthulhu was hard to pick up new players...and only did when my Traveller game fizzled (by attracting one other).

I finally tracked down a copy to page through at a Barnes & Noble. On the one hand, it looked like there was some interesting parts, like the tables for random adventures, and I rather liked how it was laid out. On the other hand, I was disappointed with the art for the most part. (I'm not sure if that thing on Page 88 is a suit of battledress or a robot). In the end I won't be buying it given that I already have four versions of the game but it looks like it might suit someone new to Traveller.

Didn't you hear? Minimal is the new flashy...

I like the simple black cover. It makes a statement.

And, the artwork I've seen is a throw-back... nostalgia.... with an upgrade...

anyway...

I'll buy it... I own all the versions; in PDF where I can and hardcopy (heck like 4 sets of CT...). So I've decided I'll buy this too... and, when time permits, will run a game with it.

It'll be interesting as I generally ran MTU and not OTU and only used the adventures for stuff and not the adventure itself.

The only thing I'd like to see is consistnecy and they finish out their run (all the old CT books released in MGT).

I'm excited by the fact that char-gen carried over consistency from core to merc and envision it'll be the same for all the other books.
