Which is to say, potentially a LOT of material of questionable use, which feeds a boom in small companies who all close up shop three years later as the originator "borrows" their ideas and material under the terms of the OGL, revises the basic game, and then adopts a bruising product schedule to occupy the same "territories" the licensees were in before they can catch up to the revision.
Yeah. Looking forward to that.
To be fair, there are two sides to every coin, GypsyComet. Some really great stuff has come out of the D20 System OGL, in addition to the questionable material your quote focuses on.
My advice is simple, and applies to all OGL releases, not just D20 or Traveller: Be sensible regarding new products, wait for reviews before buying, and then only get the stuff you think you can use, and you should be fine.
I personally look forward to the gems that will come out of this, and I do not feel that having new material available is a bad thing. I think it's a good thing, because each product has a chance to be a good product, if the creator so wishes to put in the effort, and many will. I haven't liked every single thing that has already been officially published for Traveller (Fighting Ships of the Shattered Imperium, for example), but that doesn't mean I am going to give up on its future.
If you don't like any of the new products, you don't have to buy it, and you'll still be able to run all those great games you already run with the stuff you've got. I feel confident that you're not going to be hurt by this next step in the future of Traveller, and you might even be marginally surprised by an item or two, if you allow yourself the opportunity to at least look at what comes of this whole process.
In addition, the new Traveller players will do our game some good, I think. Otherwise, when the last of us dies out, so, too, would Our Game, and that wouldn't be cool.
In Friendship,
Flynn
