Mongoose Traveller Moderation

Here's the deal. We've seen a huge volume of complaints over recent posts in the Mongoose Traveller section. Huge. At least one person has been banned, and more may follow.

I'm going to be taking a much more active role in moderating the Mongoose forums. Some may protest. Oh well. Yes, I like Mongoose Traveller. No, it's not perfect. And Yes, I am in talks with Mongoose on at least a couple of projects.

So, yes, I am biased. And I will be moderating on that basis. I'm no slobbering fan-boy, though. I can acknowledge, and deal, with valid criticism of Mongoose Traveller. If it starts going beyond that, though, I will put a stop to it. I will not, however, give someone an infraction without concurrence from at least one other Mod. Nor will I ban without similar concurrence. I will, however, give warnings without such concurrence.

While I will react to reports, I will also be reading the forums and threads and responding/reacting when required. However, it may take me a day or more to react. I have a job, a life, a wife, kids, and several ongoing projects.

Keep it civil, or keep quiet.

Several more ongoing projects apart from your kids? ;)

Hans

They are the most important, of course. I only work on writing and moderating after 10pm at night. Which explains why it takes me so long to get anything done. :)

Well, say so long to them now, buddy. And you might want to get those divorce papers pre-arranged for good measure, too. Taking the reigns of this forum is about the same thing as a 19th century sea captain coming in for lunch one day and nonchalantly announcing to all that he's "off to round the horn" in the morning.

but anyways, good luck to ya!

I've noticed that the mongoose section is a lot quieter now.

I like quite a lot of what mongoose has done and would really like to see a bit more reasoned discussion - house rules, alternative settings etc.

That's what I want to see as well. Well-reasoned criticism is also welcome. Politeness is always appreciated. Not necessarily required, but certainly welcome.

Attacks, whether attacks on board members, company staff, moderators, etc are not welcome, and will be met with "lethal" force. (caveat: I am not actually going to kill anyone, nor should anyone interpret that response as a threat of same. Please note the quotation marks.)

Hopefully, this will mean fewer people here using words in the same way as a drunkard uses a lamppost: for support, rather than for illumination. :)

So long as you apply the same rules to both sides of the debate, I'm happy. Certain MGT fans were every bit as obnoxious as the most obnoxious MGT haters.

Remember how I mentioned that someone earned themselves a ban? It wasn't a Mongoose hater... And that's all I'll say on that subject.

My bias, as I've already stated, is pro-MgT. That being said, I recognize that there is room for improvement, and that mistakes may have been made. I'm not a slobbering fanboi, by any means. I just want to make the Mongoose Traveller forum on CotI a place where people can go to get information on MgT, to hear criticism and praise, and to not be scared off.

Well, I hope it all works out. Personally, I'm skeptical that what this forum really needs is more moderation. <shrug> But that's just my opinion...

I'm interested, though, in how you'll distinguish between allowable criticism of MGT and disallowed criticism of MGT.

I think it should be fairly simple.

Criticism that is offered in a balanced, non-arrogant, non-emotional manner is fine.
(e.g. "I am not fond of the decision to declare Aslan non-psionic and here's why")

Criticism that is posted in nasty, strident, eogtistical manners with phrases that can only be interpreted as attacks is not. (e.g. "The decision to make Aslan non-psionic only proves my point that Mongoose knows nothing about Traveller and if Marc approved this change, he doesn't either.")

The first is perfectly fine and may even engender some interesting discussion.

The second is typical of the condescending tone and personal attacks that this forum simply does not need.
