Most uncool starship?

So...

Stats for the Orrimots? Or is it Orrimotti? Anything with a writeup like that needs stats at least, and a scarily convoluted deckplan that makes using an AHL as a trader make sense...

I think this is a 2,500 ton ship. Disp = 2500. And if "Volume" is in cubic meters, then that agrees.

In Traveller5, you'd have a cramped little bridge where the players are bumping into each other and/or bumping into sharp angles. There would be no central computer. You'd have the engineer programming the jump drive at its control panel, flicking toggle switches with a hydrospanner. And living space consists of two tons with three bunks each, probably fit into a pair of (otherwise empty) missile magazines.

This is a really good point. A vessel with low T5 ratings in Demand and Ergonomics wouldn't be something that's much fun to be in, however pretty it may look on the outside.

In addition, and not to have a crack at the esteemed artist to did the illustrations, but have you seen the Far Trader from the T4 Starships book? Not only does it look less appealing than even an Empress Mavara, but it'd be over a thousand years old! If it was in mothballs in some orbital holding facility it might still be in reasonable shape, or even just able to operate to a minimum acceptable standard. Getting parts for it though could be a bitch. Let alone the looks of wonder from people at starports who recognise it...

I wonder how many PCs it takes to crew a K'Kree ship. IIRC is has built in Centaur smell-o-rama and an engineering master/slave robot set up. That would be sweet revenge -- in the Marches, you couldn't resell that and the patron is tired of paying the berthing fees. It makes a great running gag -- "is that a K'Kree ship? You flew here in that? You guys are braver than I thought" (apologies to Leia).

Elsewhere at that URL the author disses the Y-Wing as ugly. I always liked it . . .

An interesting point seen in the earliest of Joe Johnston's sketches of the Y-wing were the ship having a fully 'enclosed' and smooth body-airframe, his commentary stated with the needs of frequent maintenance and repair the panels were left off for convenience of such.

Aren't there shots of "new" Y-Wings with all of their bodywork still in place in either Episode III or one of the two Clone Wars serials? I think I even have a Titanium Edition.

Donosevs aren't really sexy either.

Really? I quite like their look. They look like "spacecraft" to me.

Many times, its the artist that changes my mind. I've seen some silly pics of an X-Boat, and I've seen some damn cool ones.

@OP

Why not do a Google Images search and find a pic of an ugly spacecraft that you like, then create it using Book 2?

You'll have something new, ugly, and nothing the players have ever seen before.

So, here's a couple of ideas....

This is my favorite from my quick search: THE FIXER UPPER.

"Here's your new ship, boys!"

Sometimes, cultures have aesthetic taste that outsiders don't quite understand. For example, this ship might be a mean looking vessel in the eyes of the locals. This way, you can tempt your players with descriptions like "Bird of Prey" or "Preadator Class", raising their expectations. Then SHOW THEM THIS.

Local Ship Broker: "I've been keeping this one because I didn't want to let it go. But, the price is just too high. You're in for a real treat. I present to you, the Solar Falcon..."

Here's another idea along the same lines from that Roger Corman film, Battle Beyond The Stars: That Slug Looking Vessel.

Also consider the Tech Level on the world where the players will be buying the ship. Sure, the ship could be imported from another world, especially if it is used. But, a "lower tech" design may just be what you are looking for.

SUCH AS THIS.

Also consider that the local design may be wildly different from most other types of craft (not even "symbolic" design, as suggested above).

LIKE THIS.

Or....just for a sight gag. Maybe consider going extremely retro in the vein of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers?

The last idea I have here is to give them a ship that is ugly, but actually can be pretty cool.

Maybe something LIKE THIS.

Believable in the Traveller universe, but still not that "cool". Serviceable.

Hmm. Time to turn that into a Traveller ship, instead of a middleweight fighter (an old article by J.D.Webster put the Rebellion-era Y-Wing at 35 tons).

Eureka!

Challenge Magazine, issue #28 -- the K'Kree Xeekr'kir 6000t merchant. Only requires a crew of 6 (pilot, medic and 4 engineers). Its a giant flying saucer that smells like a barn and looks like the K'Kree homeworld inside. I think they PCs will need to live in tents.
