Movies that feel like traveller.

Hi

Yah Planetes is definately a low tech 9ish Traveller. Too bad the rest of the series kinda meanders after the first DVD.

Hi,

For me I thought "Planetes" really hit its stride about episode 6. Once I got to that point I had trouble waiting for the next disks to come out. Overall it definitely re-peaked my interest in trying a low/mid tech single solar system as a setting for a game. Unfortunately I just haven't had the time to try anything along those lines yet.

Regards

PF

Nightfall? NIGHTFALL!?? Did you actually WATCH this movie? To quote Guy from "Galaxy Quest": "Did you guys ever watch the show?" I paid MONEY for that movie. OMG. Just...drek. Horrible.

Serenity doesn't have the Traveller feel so much, compared to the Firefly show.

The first Star Wars has a taste, but only until they get off of the planet, frankly.

Alien is a monster movie, Aliens is very Traveller, and I can agree with the comment about Alien 4 (friends don't let friends watch Alien 3, 4 was so much better).

I'll throw "Abyss" in to the pot as well. It has the grittiness that I associate with Traveller.

Outland has that characteristic as well. I just don't see Traveller as "clean".

I'll also toss in "Congo", though the book was much better. It can easily be a Traveller story. Predator too.

I love 2010, that's a great movie. Can't stay awake through 2001.

"Ghosts of Mars" had a lot of "Traveller" or "2300AD" elements (I usually find the two to overlap) just use a "Ancient Artifact" explanation. Having Ice Cube and Natasha Henstridge as the leads didn't hurt either :)

I second "StarCops". And wonder if we can get a series with a (male)Cop from the BorderWorlds being assigned to Sylea and partnered with a (female) Cop born to a HighSylean noble family ;)

Babylon5 actually has a lot of "Traveller" feeling for me. Not so much the actual ship technology as the "in use" environment the "high tech and trashcans" feeling and the dedication/fanatism of EarthForce makes a nice "Solomani Grand Fleet" stand in.

DS9 also works nicely for using various elements in Traveller

I've been inspired by a lot of movies and TV shows, some of which may not even be Sci-Fi.

no one has even mentioned the venerable Star Wars?

How many folks ran SW campaigns back when? I did. Fighters, laser swords (basically CT broadswords....) etc.

Battlestar Galactica (the old series as well as new... both totally different).

Just watched the series "exile" -- very traveller~esque; in fact it's what got me thinking of "steam/aehter" traveller...

Yes, Nightfall is a horrible movie to watch...but if you are playing in the TNE era...then you have no better guide for the rise of TEDdies and ignorance of a low tech world. It was a much better short story but the movie does have some merit.

Star Wars still defines the Imperium or Empire...for me. The cantina scene has Classic Traveller written all over it.

The ships whist are not Traveller are uber cool.

Alien, because it showed working class stiffs just doing a job but end up saving the universe in the end...much like the bulk of Traveller players. Aliens is merc/marine campaign. Aliens 3 could easily be Traveller - crash on a prison planet with something nasty loose (need not be monster...but imagine plague). Aliens 4 the feel of the pirates and traders.

Oh yeah, forgot my favorite film...Fifth Element. Get rid of nasty breathing planet but similar warmachine run amok from Vargr space and you get the idea.

C'mon guys, yes they all have bits and pieces that remind me of Traveller (Outland particularly with those shotguns, and the date of release), but c'mon, there is ONLY ONE MOVIE that reminds me of Traveller: SPACE TRUCKERS. Rent it, but it, love it! Not critically aclaimed, but right up there as a good old tramp merchant yarn and a plot straight out of 76 Patrons :)

Wow, someone else saw "starcops"? I was beginning to wonder...

How about "Blake's 7"?

Count me in a big "Star Cops" fan too, and I own the DVD set. I just did a quick look on Amazon.co.uk and much as I like the show £70 second hand seems a bit steep, but if you don't have a set and don't mind VHS then there are 3 volumes (3 episodes per volume) for a few quid each (used to have them too but gave them away when the DVD set came out).

While I enjoyed "Lifeforce" I'm not sure I'd say it was very Traveller-esq. "Lifepod" on the other hand ... also:

Pitch Black,
Outland,
Space Truckers,
Dune (David Lynch version),
Firefly/Serenity,
Alien/Aliens,
Star Wars
Moontrap (good B-movie),
Critters 4 (not as good as the 1st Critters film but more Traveller),
Total Recall,
Event Horizon (beginning of),
Supernova (bits of),
Moon 44,
Big Trouble In Little China (not SF but very like a group of PCs),
Disorganised Crime (again not SF but very like a group of PCs),
Earth 2,
Farscape,
Babylon 5,
BSG (original and new),
Alien Nation (TV series),
Star Trek (DS9 and the original films),
Blakes 7,
Lexx (twisted!)

And bad as it was I was surprised just how many parallels there were between TNE and season one of "Andromeda". And tell me that wasn't a Droyne as pilot in the first episode!

I was going to add "Star Lost" (which is really bad) but that was more Metamorphus Alpha than Traveller.

What was the old movie from the late 70's with Kirk Douglass and Fayeh Faycette?

Aliens and SW IV are the basis for alot of stuff in my mind but alot also comes from the SF books of the 60's-70's.

Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett starred in "saturn 3", movie based solely on the fact some SFX guy designed and built this biomechanical robot based on Da Vinci's anatomical drawings of the human body.

So so movie, frankenstein meets alien more or less. Awesome robot, the rest was...meh.

Google has nothing on "Fayeh Faycette".

Were you perhaps meaning Farrah Fawcett?

And this movie?

edit: Here I was, dragging through Kirk Douglas and Farra F credit lists, and Trent beats me to it!

Star Wars (in parts)
Aliens/Alien and parts of Aliens 3 & 4
Outland
Enemy Mine
Battlestar Galactica Razor
Nightfall
Slipstream
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Apollo 13 (not so much for tech but innovate players solving problems)
parts of Aliens vs Predator
Ran
parts of Event Horizion (before they opened the portal)
Blade Runner

Kurosawa's "RAN"? How does that get in there?

Yah, I was thinking the same thing but neglected to touch on it.
Ran is the consumate dynastic struggle between rival Aslan clans that was a campaign that lasted a good 1.5yrs back in High School. Similarly, I have appropiated alot of L5R for my current rendition of the Aslan "social scene". Ran also makes a good analogy for a High Nobility Imperial Campaign.

Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
Seaquest DSV
Most of Clint Eastwood's Western films.
A film starring Rutger Hauer the title of which I can't remember. It was set in an apocalyptic future where the focus of society was a game played with dog skulls. I've used the plot in a lost colony setting.
Any Kurosawa film can be used for Aslans.
