Music for Traveller

Well, since I'm a big fan, I'd be remiss not to mention the Lord Weird Slough Feg's concept album "Traveller" - which is inspired directly by Trav. It takes some liberties with the OTU (but who doesn't?) but is a solid heavy metal prog-rock album. Reminiscent of old Iron Maiden, et al.

But for the "floating around in space, exploring a star faring galaxy" I'd recommend the EvE Online soundtrack by Jon Hallur of CCP. Lots of ambient, synth harmonics. Very nicely done.

Those are my 2 choices also. Fantastic, both of them.

At every meeting we start with Philip Glass:Kundun OST:Northern Tibet because I
used it in my invitation trailer for my trader campaign many years ago.

This music tells every player to stop the prelude-chatting and to focus on the start of the game session ("Listen: They are playing our song, lets start gaming").

That's an interesting choice, and also one of my favourite works by Philip Glass. Also a great film.

When you guys talk about the sound track to Heavy Metal are you refering to the rock sound track or the score? I highly recomend the score. Very, very, very underated.

Russian sci-fi community is blessed with the site named Elite Games, dedicated to the kind of video games sparked by Elite. It has lots of music tracks (and remixes) with a sci-fi feel, most of them done by members.

Occasionally I use music from my collection of videogame soundtracks. Mostly old classics. For example, Ecco series soundtracks are perfect for underwater adventures:

For something a touch different from the usual space-opera fare with vast orchestrations, or even the techno thing which can be equally compelling, from one of my all time favorite FPS games, Redneck Rampage, I bring you Mojo Nixon's "UFOs, Big Rigs, and Bar-b-que"....try and keep an open mind.

In MTU, the theme music was mostly Brian Eno. My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts was inspiration for a pocket empire which the characters misjumped into which was in the Ziafplians Sector of Zhodani Space. The Gimmick of the campaign was Zone Dance equipment which was constructed of X-ray laser pumped Oxygen Emitting Hologram "stereo" entertainment. This in reality was a TL-D fusion bomb designed to rip Jump space open to The OTU.

Laurie Anderson was really popular with the group while planning and in jump space. German and Austrian Marches were the theme for combat.

This is my current favorite space and inspirational music. Kim worked hard and even got NASA scientist as advisors for some of the songs. Even though she used natural space sounds for some of the rifts if you listen real close its just the beat of the heart. She puts on a great show too.

Probably the nicest review I will ever see in Crack magazine too. http://kimboekbinder.tumblr.com/

"Natural space sounds"? How does that work? There's no sound in space, since there's no air to be vibrated. ;)

People have already mentioned Tangerine Dream (I am particular to their album Underwater Sunlight), so I will throw Yoko Kanno out there. Yoko Kanno is a Japanese composer best known for her work on soundtracks for anime like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Gundam 0083, Ghost in the Shell (all), Macross Plus, and Outlaw Star. She has incredible range and depth with her music.

hey yeah, gotta love Yoko Kanno, but I do want to show off a possible inspirational source for the Cowboy Bebop theme...

Her work on the early .hack and Noir are great too. She's got a great ability to understand the components and work new magic in old style.

High Passage/Low Passage by The Lord Wierd Slough Feg. Besides, the album art is perfect!

I am a space pirate, you know my name
Asteroid mining is a dangerous game
Imperial navy can't keep up my pace
Chasing a rock into Zhodani space

You heard about me in the Frontier Wars
Psionic menace carrying alien spores
A living legend in the asteroid mines
Outvoting tarrifs and Imperial fines
One-thousand credits is my humble price
Whether it's nickel, iron, stone or ice
Only the wayfaring patron would dare
A merchant cruiser, a skyway corsair

It's not a mineral that I seek here
High passage, low passage
Any way I'm outta here
I was born in colonies
On fringe worlds of the galaxy
Meanwhile in Zhodani space
Imperial flagships follow me
