Yer Grace! Wow...umm, welcome to this humble topic, sir...
Great choices btw. I see from this date, its three to one "use" to "do not use". I'll add that of the 32 that do use, only 7 use stuff with lyrics, the rest use soundtracks without lyrics.
Hmmm. I think we're onto something here!

Welcome back to the boards, yer Grace.
heretically yours,

For the Crew down on planet handling cargo: "La Grange" By ZZ Top.
For travelling between the stars: "Journey of the Sorceror" By The Eagles.
For high wind planets "Oxygene" By Jean Michel Jarre.
For combat: Babylon 5 V2.
For more surrealistic sessions: The Fifth Element sound track.

"Acknot!...Whut?" :D

I like that one, too.

I've also begun using Strauss (among others) waltzes to represent "Official" Imperial happenings, such as the arrival of an Imperial fleet, or attending an upper-SOC ball, etc. Anything where the characters might gain some understanding of just how huge and enduring the Imperium is, either through their representatives (Navy, officials, etc) or through their social traditions.

As to lyrical vs. intrumental music, I will use lyrical music provided the lyrics have some relevance to the mood I am trying to establish. If I've got some odd-sounding rock music going to give the impression of an alien setting, I'm not going to want a singer belting out lyrics that the players may recognize as meaning something entirely different. That's why I tend to use instrumental pieces.

Currently that seems to be leading the pack, on music enhancement GMs here...non lyrical music vs Lyrical. Thanks Simon Jester fer postin'!

Anyone use Kitaro, or Tangerine Dream's music? Or for Bar scenes, Sci fi filk?

Nope but I just heard a tune that gave me the same sense of dislocation a human might experience entering a vargr bar.

It was a dutch version of 'barbie girl' it wasn't just the fact that I don't understand dutch. The male chorus was too deep voiced and too enthusiastic.. (not in a bad way just dislocating. the familier gone UNfamilier)

anyhoo. just a strange experience that I might pass on to my players.

I can see that..I remember scenes from some Chuck Norris movies of Post-Vietnam of the karaoke bars..and hearing amercian music sung by Thai performers...odd, yet familiar. Food fer thought..thanx Garf.

Agreed. The first time I ever heard Russian versions of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" and "Sympathy For The Devil," and the Beatles' "Hey, Jude" and "Back in the USSR" is a night I'll never forget, although later parts get real fuzzy. :D

Never, EVER, try to match a Russian drink for drink with vodka shooters. You will feel pain in the morning.

For me, it was Scotsmen with whiskey & drambuie shooters. Then we ran 12 miles the mornin after! I was among three who finished with the PI. Helluva hangover! YUS!

Does anyone have a copy of a Russian version of "Paint it Black" or "Sympathy for the Devil"?
I'd love to hear it!

I got to witness the live version, on liberty in Singapore during a "show-the-flag" visit, during which a Soviet destroyer also decided to drop by. A group of Russian deck apes and our group from the engine room (USS Brooke, FFG-1) both decided to inhabit the same karaoke bar at the same time (it was the bar with the lowest cover charge and most anatomically-correct neon signs, two items that were apparently important no matter which socio-political environment you come from).

After a few minutes of discussion, a local shore patrol showed up and we generally decided to join forces against the common enemy. Much enjoyment of physical activity ensued, followed very closely by mutual relocation to new bar with nearly anatomically-correct signage. Singing and drinking continued throughout the remainder of the night and much of the morning.

I'm still not entirely certain how I got back to my ship, or why they let me aboard wearing part of the uniform of a Soviet Navy deck hand, although nothing official was ever mentioned about it afterward. About $40 was deucted from my next paycheck, for damages to the original bar, but that was the extent of it.

Sometimes I really regret leaving the Navy. In two more years I would have had my twenty.

For those who don't know, "La Grange" was th signature tune the used for the oiler crew in "Armageddon". And "Journey of the Sorceror" is the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Theme.

Another good tune for when yer pushing the ships outer design criteria (like say, doing a gravity whip arounda gas giant) is Boston's Cool The Engine's.

I don't use Tangerine Dream per se
but Christopher Franke, the composer for the B5 soundtracks, is a TD alumni. While I own a couple of Kitaro albums, I don't listen to them much; not often in the mood, I guess. I'm more a JMJarre and Vangelis fan.

For bar scenes, I use lounge music (though neither Manilow nor Diamond, thank you very much) or light jazz. Club scenes call for techno and industrial, though I try to put in more unusual stuff on occasion to see if anyone's paying attention (i.e. NIN's "Closer: Super Mario Mix"). ;)

I can't believe I forgot this artist: Warren Zevon.

"Lawyers, Guns and Money."
"Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner."
"The Envoy."
"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead."

Perfect music for mercenary/intrigue campaigns.

He also did an album of cyberpunk-inspired music.

I was sorry to hear recently he's dying. :( I've always loved his music.

The cyberpunk album was Transverse City, the title track and track 2, run strraight down, being really really dark... but only if you listen to the lyrics. The album was often playing as a prequel to my first TNE campaign's sessions. Put me in the right mood. All the tracks happen to have found their way to youtube.

The only time I have thought of using music during a game session of any kind was using some of the music from the Victory at Sea score CD for indicating incoming air attacks by either the Japanese or the US. For the Japanese, it was The Pacific Boils Over, and for the US, it was the Theme of the Fast Carriers.

I guess you could use the music score for Forbidden Planet if you wanted too.

For discrimination loss reasons, I almost never use music during, but often use it right before session. too many years of altos singing in my ears...
